Chris Silverwood:

Anthly

Central Defender
Aussie commentator on radio says England manager/coach Chris Silverwood is giving the team strange tactics and poor team selections. Basically not fit for purpose. I remember Silverwood as average test player, I don’t know much about him.
Will somebody with more cricket knowledge than myself (not that hard!) share their opinions on Silverwood… Is the Aussie right?
Thanks.

Yes very average Test player and thought at the time he was the wrong choice for coach.

Not fit for purpose would seem to be an accurate description.

Stupid nickname as well.

I thought he started off alright, when we went 1-0 up against India we were number 1 in the world briefly. Since then it has been absolutely shite mind

The ECB are one of the richest cricket federations in the world, and it's the most prestigious coaching job in the world. They could have appointed just about anyone (Kirsten, Hesson etc), someone who could change our whole approach to test cricket. Instead they gave it to Silverwood because he's 'a good lad' and next in line.

Having been part of a backroom team that underperformed in Test cricket for about five years. Was always the cheap/easy option, and nowhere near the best one.

True, it's my go after him ;)

Silverwood did a cracking job at Essex. If that's irrelevant with regards to appointing the England coach then county cricket must be in a worse state than even I think it is and that saying something.

I feel like it's Peter Moores in diguise for a third spell in charge
Without the youngsters coming through in his previous spells

Had 1 of the best openers in world cricket in Sir Cook, had 1 of the best finger spinners in cricket too.
What england wouldn't give for those two

I’m not usually one to get stuck into cricket coaches as I think, historically, their influence has been more limited than that of a football manager.

But decision making, team selection and man management seems to have been nothing short of shambolic under the leadership of Silverwood and Root for the best part of two years now and there seems to be few signs it’s getting better
