Charlie Methven on metro radio

To be fair his exact words were "on sheer size of club it's hard to say that Charlton are the ones who have to stay down", when responding to a question about whether a club our size shouldn't be in league one. I think that was poorly worded, and I think the fans have more than done their bit in terms of turning up and supporting in huge numbers so the dig (which is how it comes across) about the attendance was unnecessary. Pretty much agree with the rest of it like, and on the whole I quite like Methven, but some of his comments here aren't going to endear him. It is a bad time to be interviewed mind, just after we've not gone up. Still, the main issue was the performance, not just at Wembley but for long portions of the season, be interesting to see how they address that, don't think the fans can do much more than we have tbh
Speaking raw and from the Heart.
Makes a refreshing change tbh

Basically says you can’t say that Sunderland deserve to go up because we are a bigger club than Charlton because on the evidence of Wembley attendance we aren’t as we sold 34k and they sold 40k. Adds to that our fans were quiet in comparison to there’s. Then the rest is just saying we all need to dust ourselves down, it’s been a failure but need to crack on rather than sulk.

well he's spot on then.

So we are still arguing about attendances , who was louder and who is a “bigger club” .

I’m glad the season is over and we can all have a break from it all for a bit, insert cliche of choice here , maybe about dusting ourselves down etc

I mean aside from anything else - what a time to have a pop at the support. What a time to choose.

He can fuck off at this stage for me. Consistently puts his foot in it and slags the fans off.

He’s had a tremendous amount of goodwill from us this season but at some point it runs out. That clock ticks faster if the on field displays are turgid shite.

I bear no ill will toward Stewart Donald but Charlie seems to be a bit of an arse.

Maybe we don’t get enough visibility of the work he actually does for the club?

The owners are crumbling infront of our eyes.

Can they handle it?

I don’t know if that’s it because Methven has always been an abrasive rent a gob. A footballing equivalent of Nigel Farage that people have been taken in by. ‘Loves a pint’, ‘got our club back’ and all that bollocks is nonsense. I’m not gonna be suckered into all that, these people come and go, they aren’t heroes and they shouldn’t ever be put on the pedestals that they have been because there’s always inevitable turbulence round the corner.

Our fans were quiet and seemingly hungover from the Trafalgar party. Charlton were only louder when singing Allez Allez Allez which in itself is pathetic.

The lower attendance is a direct result of being there for Checkatrade and the way we limped in at the end of the season

The strange thing is that Methven is the PR bloke, but often you hear him and he says some things that get people's backs up and then it's Donald who has to try and smooth everything over. I'd give a fair bit of leeway due to the timing of the interview, and at least he sounds passionate, but after the backing the club have had all season, records broken, huge expense twice for Wembley to be let down, I'm not keen to hear any criticism of the support. I'm sure it would have been louder if we'd actually attacked and had some sustained periods of pressure. As it was, other than being gifted a goal and Leadbitter having one shot, it seemed like it was constantly them looking more likely to make things happen. Atmospheres will never be great in those situations much though we'd all like to think everyone will sing and scream regardless

His daft desperate pleas to get people to go to the match are pathetic

Sooner he shuts up the better. Called our supporters parasites. The bloke is f***ing awful
Him and SD with their pleas have resulted in an Inc in St sales and a sell out on boxing day.
It's worked a treat.
If you think they should sit their quietly and not try to boost our numbers and revenue then that's really odd

I cant argue with what he said at all. The attendance thing was said because the guy asking the questions said we shouldnt be in this division based on club size, he replied saying well look at Charlton, they brought more so club size doesnt matter. Thats the way i took it.

We need a designated singing section if we get to wembo again like Charlton did so everyone who wants to make a noise can. Was too spread out. Overall though our support this season has been class in numbers but absolutely shite in terms of vocal support except for a few games.

That’s some bad words from a pr guy. Whichever way you twist the words he is having a pop at the number of fans and tickets sold at Wembley.
The second time down there in 6 weeks, it’s not a affluent area it’s difficult to do. Maybe if he hadn’t made such a song and dance about the checkatrade we would have sold the 40k. I remember the week of the checkatrade he was on saying we could have sold 75k tickets for the game.

Emotions running high clearly but also having a pop at the team and then sticking by the manager of said team isn’t good enough.

Seems a very modern thing these 3 things and appear on here almost every bloody week.

Attendances
Atmosphere
Who is the bigger club.

He’s entitled to his opinion the same as the rest of us. And his response Ill judged though some may see it is a lot more measured than some of the crap that’s been posted on here since Sunday.

Agree with his last point. But there’s not a great deal I can do about that as a fan. Should I take time out of my day job to help them?

I hope to fuck that our player recruitment structure is being overhauled already. That’s point one.

‘But we’ve got our club back’

Sick of hearing that shite trotted out.

True colours shining through here Charlie boy eh....

I'm starting to really question what people mean about this.

Is it having our club back that the fans change the seats? Or that the owner goes on a podcast where he won't be asked anything too controversial? Or that we are yet again being let down by the shite on the pitch?

If we were being our classed and putting in 100% effort I could understand. But we aren't we are playing shit. We are failing at basic stuff on the pitch. And I fear the first game at the SOL if things don't go our way.
