CC :: Durham v Warwickshire

brandon

Striker
Starting Thursday.

Will be interesting to see the squad when it’s announced later this week, I would hope given recent performances that Trevaskis is included in the 12/13, I would imagine Thomson won’t be allowed to feature against his parent club and it’s becoming increasingly likely that he’ll end his return having not played (or come particularly near to playing) a game for us.

If Carse can overcome his ankle injury he has to play, unfortunately I don’t think Wood will be allowed to play, which is a shame given they’ll have Stone as part of an attack which from what I can see appears to be the strongest one we’ll have faced up to this point.

Clearly we were all hugely frustrated with the way the game yesterday ended, I make that 9 days of cricket out of 12 this season where we have been overwhelmingly better than our opponents - but unfortunately for us, the three days we have been ‘outplayed’ have all been the most vital days of the games in question.

I said prior to last weeks game that the future is bright and the Derbyshire game only hammered home that point (in my mind) because whereas the first couple of games could’ve been flash in the pan, we’re now sustaining that high quality and level of performance over a bigger sample size. We absolutely need to begin finishing games off of course and I do worry that sooner or later we are likely to ‘hoy one in’ and emphasise the point that we need to make the most of these good positions but it’s undeniable that we’re heading in very much the right direction with regards to where we need to be come next year at the very least when ‘normal service’ resumes*.

I’ve taken the liberty of copy and pasting the current taboe

1 32014953
2 300310741
3 31115837
430036737
530127932
630126830

I was generally against the increasing of points for a draw, but the one good thing to come out of it from our point of view is that our good cricket has atleast been rewarded by us being still very much in the hunt for the top 2 at this stage. At worst, it’s given us a little bit of protection against a bad performance in the next few games aslong as the ship is righted either side of it.

No Second XI game to start the week this week it appears, unless I’ve missed something, Warwickshire appear to be at Notts.

As usual though the club have been terrible at keeping us informed of goings on at the club as the website has a blank screen** when visiting the 2nd XI fixture section.

*Unless FTECB bastardise the Championship again.
**Tried two different devices, can anyone else get it?

I honestly have let all the bypass me, is this a new format for the cc or is it just temporary? Is there promotion/relegation with these groups and when the season ends is there some kind of trophy play off based on finishing positions or does it just end?

Well written introduction with graphics there is more chance of Bedingham being dropped for Thursday than you loosing the job of match thread starter.

I think after this group stage teams are allocated into three different leagues, the top league fight for the championship and the bottom fight to avoid the wooden spoon. I haven't looked that closely though but I think that's roughly right although some details might differ.

Depressing and annoying we are second bottom after some of our performances.

But still very much within touch of the leaders, which was the point I was trying to emphasise upon sharing the table.

Three groups of 6 - based on last seasons Bob Willis Trophy standings - play each other home and away.

Top 2 from each group go on to compete in the Championship group. Winner of that wins the 2021 County Championship trophy, whilst facing the team who comes second for a right to win the Bob Willis Trophy.

Teams who come 3rd and 4th go into the Intertoto roup.

Teams who finish 5th and 6th go into the Wooden Spyun Group.

All teams play each other home and away in the second phase except the team you played in the first phase - the points from those games however are carried forward. For example, if Durham and Derbyshire ‘go through’ we won’t play each other again in the second phase, the points from yesterday (and the return fixture) will be added to our second phase total.

We've picked up bonus points well but that defeat to Essex cost us. Still pisses me off that, it should have been easier to win.

right after the second read i think i understand. do we know the format for next year? just curious if results will feed into some kind of seeding for next year

seems canny pointless having a bob willis trophy when it is literally just a final between first and second place.

It's my understanding in the second phase we will play the other four teams in the group who we haven't met this season but it will be either home or away not both which will add up to the usual 14 four day in a season.

No, we’ve been lead to believe the format for next year will revert back to what it was before the pandemic. BUT, this is the ECB we’re dealing with.

A little off topic but didn't feel worth an actual new thread but there is a cracking interview with John Windows available on Durham TV, YouTube etc. He talks about what the age groups have been up to over winter and plans for this summer. Basically the few who are on academy contracts have been able to use the indoor facility at South North as much as they want as they got listed on the elite sports list the others nothing. It's well worth a listen feel really sorry for the youngsters who are on the up but not on contracts especially since the club cut the number of players on the academy staff 2 years ago.
