CC : Durham v Somerset

Stokes immense like. Incredible amount of zip he’s getting, lovely carry. Really showing what the England team have been missing when he’s been playing as a bowler only.
Didn't see any of his bowling today but yesterday at the Riverside it was clear he was bowling at least 2 yards quicker than anyone else and doing as much with the ball as well.

Words can't describe the talent of Ben Stokes.
You won't see a better bowling spell in the County Championship this year. 10 overs of absolute quality.
It could just illustrate the absolute chasm that now exists between the county game and someone who only plays at international level. It must be like coming back to play with schoolkids.

Still, if he'd just kept his head last week, how good night the table look?
Bill Bailey, Jenson Button, Ann Widdicombe
Bridget Christie, although I like her.

Also cider.

I thought all our bowlers did really well today. Tight lines, very few freebies, always asking questions. Siddle still looks pretty quick for an old fella. Brilliant to see Stokes moving so freely and bowling with pace, but also not relying on banging it in short all the time. Quality bowling. If he could buy a run he'd be in England fettle already. 15 wickets in 2 matches I think but only 20 runs too. I'm hoping he'll turn out for at least one of the June CC fixtures

We were 9 down when I set off for the ground today and I was delighted but slightly staggered to find we were still batting when I got there

I was hoping we could bat through the first session this morning and have roundabout a 100 run lead. But I was expecting Bedders to score the bulk of those runs. When he was out early on it looked as if we were going to be bowled out by 11.30 and only have a small lead. Unexpectedly the tail wagged with Raine and Siddle being exceptional and we ended up with just short of a 100 run lead. Even managed to squeeze a batting point in.

Then just ran through them with the ball. Bizarre scenes at the end following Leach being bowled I couldn’t understand why he was hanging around and then shook the umpires hand. Then it came up on the scoreboard that Banton was absent so Somerset were all out. I was expecting Ball to score a rapid 50 following his 5 fer (not bad for a bloke that didn’t even start the game) just to rub salt into the concussion wound. Maybe Banton being unable to bat was a bit of karma.

Excellent win and cracking performances by bat and ball at crucial times from Raine,Siddle and Stokes who sucked all strength and fight from Somerset

Brilliant stuff from Durham. We were all looking for a lead of 80 -100 but I don't think many of us could have predicted it would come from a tenth wicket partnership of 66 between Raine and Siddle.

And then after that came demolition. I pointed out earlier today that I can't recall a bigger attendance for a county championship match at the Riverside since before Covid. Where they all there to see Stokes? Well possibly and if they were then they weren't disappointed. That ten over spell was wonderful to watch - absolute quality. But it wasn't just Stokes, Raine bowled superbly, Coggs chipped in and Siddle proved why he's still a great bowler at 39 (and a decent bat as well).

Make no mistake Somerset are a good team but on that wicket we made them look like nothing.
Well done Durham and now onto the T20 ...oh and I definitely won't be starting the threads for those games mind!

Games against Somerset always feel a bit special to me as the first time I saw this fixture was at Stockton CC. I lived round the corner at the time, so got to see Hussey, Colly, Plunkett, Harmison, Caddick, Trescothick and Jayasuriya at the end of my road. Even then I felt bloody lucky to see players of that calibre at the local club.
