CC :: Durham v Nottinghamshire

brandon

Striker
Starting Thursday, early weather forecast (I know it’s too early to properly predict, like) is sketchy. Dry Day 1 but a chance of showers on the other days.

Nottinghamshire have been involved in the only two positive results in Division Two this season - all other results have ended in a draw - with a win at Sussex followed by a defeat at home to Glamorgan on Sunday. They’re the favourites for the title in seemingly every pundit’s eyes, but I stand by my statement prior to the season that I don’t believe the hype. They’re a solid side, of that there’s no doubt at all, but we should’ve beaten them last season away from home and on the evidence of the last fortnight, of both of us facing Glamorgan, we’ve got nowt to worry about

Selection headaches for Franklin and Borthwick if Lees is fit - all three of our openers have scored plenty of runs in the two games, they’ve all recorded centuries . I’m not even going to try and predict the lineup at this point, but I will say that 3-5 should stay the same. It may be that one of the three openers drops to 6, with Eckersley at 7, but that would mean there would only be space for four bowlers and I doubt we’d go 3 seamers and Trevaskis.

Ben Stokes…

Aside from team selection, I’m sure 99% of the members will hope for a more sporting wicket this week. Having said that, draws do carry much more value now than in previous years and high bonus point scoring draws have us second at this point. It’s too early to worry about tables clearly, but I say that merely to highlight that it could be a tactic of the management to try and mould us into a team who is difficult to beat, difficult to grind down. Our batting for once has become a real strength and it did occur to me that in playing a far inferior (on paper) opposition in Leicestershire last week, perhaps the tactic was that a flat pitch would leave nothing to chance. This week against a stronger foe, a bit of life could be of use.

We’ll see. I should be making my first appearance of the season

Ha’way Durham!

If Lees is fit (Coughlin seemed fine from Day 2 onwards at the Leics game) I would have them in the starting XI with Trevaskis and Gibson standing down. Would open with Lees and Dickson with Jones at No.6.

Lees was netting on Sunday so is presumably fit. Stokes is only going to recommence training this week and I'd doubt Carse is regarded as being at full fitness. I suspect Lees replacing Jones will be the only change. If weather remains dry there's a chance of getting a bit turn so Trevaskis has to play imo.Anyway he's a decent 6/7 bat.

Would be incredibly harsh on Jones but team first.

I don't think carse has bowled yet although I did see he got a run a ball 130 for burnopfield

Given he's barely used trev it'll be interesting to see who stays in the side between Jones/Dickson/trevaskis

Carse bowled 6 overs for Burnopfield- took 1-23. A gentle warm up?

I'd include Lees (if fit enough) and drop Jones to make a position available for him. Otherwise, I'd leave the batting and middle order alone.

I'd rest Gibson, give him a bit of time to think about his performance and probably bring in Coggers in his place.

I'd keep Trev. and he should have been bowled more than he was. I think he's a very good player.

Personally I think you have got to have a viable 5th bowler in championship cricket as the games come so quick and would keep Trevaskis and continue to bat him at 7.
If Lees is fit tough call on whoever misses out especially Jones but Dickson has looked very good and I can't see them dropping him.
Not sure who actually mentioned it on here it may have been Parkside with concerns about our bowling rather than batting during pre season but at this very early stage it looks signing a 2nd overseas bat could be bit excessive when we need to win matches to get promoted and don't currently have that bowler who can make the difference on a flat pitch.
Still very early days though and I still fancy us for promotion. I think we will know slot more after the Notts game and which Notts outfit turn up.

Hopefully but they knew before Xmas he wasn't going to be ready for the start of the season and if their honest knew even if they where fit that Wood and Stokes wouldn't be starting the season.
But hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Nobody could have foreseen Dickson and Jones having starts to the season like this. Given Lees England prospects a bat was the correct choice

As I say hindsight a great thing but not sure who it was but somebody on here mentioned our bowling before the start of the season. I had never thought it would be an issue but we do need to win matches to get out of this division. Also I would accept that it's easier these days to talk about signing an effective overseas than actually getting one.
Notts will be interesting they have gone the complete opposite to us and signed two pace bowlers as overseas.

it's not the most out there suggestion tbf. every year you feel we can't rely on rushy as much as we have. coughlin hasn't really kicked on like we'd hoped, potts is still yet to be really tested and all of our bowlers outside of rushworth & raine have injury question marks floating around them. it's no longer the days of having the likes of plunkett & davies who can't get into the team

despite that, it is still a stronger group than our batsmen on paper - or at least it was until dickson turned into a run machine & jones not far behind

Yes but it's there SLA who won their game for them. He's bowled 100 overs this season compared to Trevaskis 30 odd. The Leics 2nd innings was the ideal opportunity to give him a good long bowl. Don't think there's much difference between him and P-W who, ironically, is Sunderland born.

Could be an issue, albeit pitches are pretty good in April and there hasnt been loads and loads of wins across country

Potts and Carse are absolute key, Rushy will come in to this own later in the season

I agree we dont have loads else, few injuries and we look very weak.
