Starting Thursday, early weather forecast (I know it’s too early to properly predict, like) is sketchy. Dry Day 1 but a chance of showers on the other days.
Nottinghamshire have been involved in the only two positive results in Division Two this season - all other results have ended in a draw - with a win at Sussex followed by a defeat at home to Glamorgan on Sunday. They’re the favourites for the title in seemingly every pundit’s eyes, but I stand by my statement prior to the season that I don’t believe the hype. They’re a solid side, of that there’s no doubt at all, but we should’ve beaten them last season away from home and on the evidence of the last fortnight, of both of us facing Glamorgan, we’ve got nowt to worry about
Selection headaches for Franklin and Borthwick if Lees is fit - all three of our openers have scored plenty of runs in the two games, they’ve all recorded centuries
. I’m not even going to try and predict the lineup at this point, but I will say that 3-5 should stay the same. It may be that one of the three openers drops to 6, with Eckersley at 7, but that would mean there would only be space for four bowlers and I doubt we’d go 3 seamers and Trevaskis.
Ben Stokes…
Aside from team selection, I’m sure 99% of the members will hope for a more sporting wicket this week. Having said that, draws do carry much more value now than in previous years and high bonus point scoring draws have us second at this point. It’s too early to worry about tables clearly, but I say that merely to highlight that it could be a tactic of the management to try and mould us into a team who is difficult to beat, difficult to grind down. Our batting for once has become a real strength and it did occur to me that in playing a far inferior (on paper) opposition in Leicestershire last week, perhaps the tactic was that a flat pitch would leave nothing to chance. This week against a stronger foe, a bit of life could be of use.
We’ll see. I should be making my first appearance of the season
Ha’way Durham!
