Captaincy at Durham for 2019

A tricky one. It should be a batsman (having captained as a bowler, its bloody hard work and often hectic)! Probably Steel and someone else for the T20.

I would say you'd want
a batsman, preferably not an opener but at the end of the day that's not a showstopper.
mature, 26 y.o. and older
several seasons playing 1st class cricket (4+)
guaranteed a place in the 1st class team
from the North East

and that leaves us with ….. drum roll ….. no one.

Maybe, maybe Smith …. done it before, has history at the club, has maturity …. but his form this season has been seriously unimpressive. Maybe dropping down the order can help him?

The problem is do we have a current player who is first on the team sheet every week? Because you need the captain to be a regular. I can only hope that work is going on behind the scenes to bring in a quality player who has been a regular captain or vice captain at another County. If not, then the pressure will be enormous on whoever is given the 'honour'!

Yes, Hobson's choice really. Fortunately, with a very strong and experienced attack captaincy on the field shouldn't be too onerous. Steel has experience of captaincy with DCCU.

nailed on regulars IMO are lees, steel, rushworth [discounting bancroft as he has no experience of the side or the competions]

the other batsman are not nailed on and the bowlers are too injury prone.

Bancroft has played County cricket
But discounted because, not much, but especially because of the controversy around him.

I'd say Poynter is a regular.

Also remember being captain in cricket is more than the on the field direction. He is/should be someone important within the club, more than in football he should be contributing to selection, strategy and tactics. So, you need someone with an amount of maturity.

If we're going for someone who will be a regular (injury aside) mature and Durham through and through then the choice is Rushy - problem is, he's a bowler and that's not ideal for a couple of reasons and also does he want to do it.

I guess the hope is that the money released from Colly not being paid could allow for a further body to be brought in (as well as Lees etc) and they may be the captain as well.

Boon/Benks both came to club as captain werent they?

i thought about possibly putting poynter in that category but not sure he is 100% nailed down. if he has a poor year with the bat, richardson has a good one and then i can imagine he'd get picked ahead - obviously this requires the likes of clark, smith etc to be god enough to stay in the side also. and if this davies lad looks excpetional both could find themselves on the outside looknig in. also i wouldn't want him captaining anyhow

i agree with everything else you say

I did wonder if the 60k available was without Colly's money.

Rashid might actually attract some of the local asian community along to watch, something we haven't tapped into at all.
