Cancel Culture

That's an interesting supposition on its own. Where else would you get knowledge from other than anecdotally (which is then an opinion) or from books and lectures. ALL knowledge is surely online in some form or other therefore a search engine will facilitate that search.

Under the presupposition that google is just a tool for finding information and has absolutely no bias you’d be right, but we know that most global tech companies have innate biases.

As may a book author or a place of learning. I'd argue that the search engine will ultimately give you the tools to make an informed decision. Suppose a lot depends on your own "unconscious biases" ** when you conduct that search.

** fuck, I've gone and used it:rolleyes:

I’d say removing unwanted search results or sorting order would be two things to consider.

Well, you'll always have that when you can pay for your place in the pecking order. Suppose it depends on what you're trying to find and how well you know the source of the info you're reading. There's no absolute truth on the vast majority of information you read so I suppose ultimately you'll quote the one which best resonates with your own belief system.

Cancel culture is the latest phrase used by right wing media as a way of trying to delegitamise someone or just discount the opinion of someone who thinks differently to them.

They are, somewhat ironically, trying to 'cancel' the opinions of people by using that phrase.

Sure, but in attempt to funnel opinion into certain directions they’ve facilitated the further fragmenting of society and truth, I agree there was never a singular truth but now you’ve got it ramped up to 90.

Certainly has ramped up now that we all have a tiny computer in our pockets at all time. When I think back to my formative years I either had to go to a library, buy myself a book or attend a political gathering to learn stuff, but even then the views in the book were of a type (Arguments for Democracy by Tony Benn) or meetings of the Socialist Workers Party. That was because of my dislike for Thatcherism but I think now I am much better able to access both sides of the argument than I was back then.

I think in an effort to obscure unpleasant truths some parties will disseminate multiple stories to confuse and then call everything a conspiracy theory, which of course is true, almost all of them are conspiracy theories, but the end result is to have more people confused, angry and siloed off.

Just think how that lad that flow the plane (not arrested, not illegal) over Burnley was named & treated and compare that to those arrested for tearing down the listed Colston statue or the one trying to burn the Union flag, both illegal acts but neither were named and there was no witch hunt 🤷‍♂️

It entirely depends what side you come from.

One side will think it's an unfair outcome for someone saying something and having their lives ruined by those that disagree

The other side will say it's just someone exercising their right to speech and other people disagreeing with that.

Personally I don't see the harm as long as someone isn't wrongly a 'victim' of it (which is where the grey area comes from). Take the racist knacker from Burnley who flew the message with clear racial undertones. People didn't like it, they found out who did it, told his employer, who ultimately agreed and he was sacked. Personally I don't see the harm in it, people should realise that their actions have consequences.

It is however extremely hard to 'police' and relies on the mob to judge who's 'guilty' which isn't really fair.

Google isn't neutral. Or non biased. It leads you to what you have seen, what they want you to see etc

Online smear campaigns against people who say something that goes against what Marxists/the Millenial Left/BLM/SJW think. A recent example is against the actress from Killing Eve who supports LGBT but is going out with a Trump supporter, they are trying to 'cancel' her career. It's a threat to free speech.

Who exactly is trying to cancel her career?

“Cancel culture” is a real thing, but it’s stoked by the right-leaning press that builds it up and gives it attention.

The Daily Mail article about the Killing Eve actress says “hundreds” of people - that’s a drop in the ocean in the world of social media.

If the right-leaning newspapers don’t stoke the fires of these stories and give them undue attention, they’ve got no clickbait for bored housewives and angry middle aged men.

If a few angry people say angry things on Twitter does that constitute a widespread cancel culture? No, but if the papers don’t create a moral panic over it, they don’t sell papers and they don’t get ad revenue online.
