I’ve used scaffold netting. This sort of stuff.

I have two 8ft cages butting together so there must be a gap big enough for them to get through. Haven’t had any problems with caterpillars as such mind. Just wish everything was as easy to grow as beetroot!
The last time I had a go at that it bolted!

Had a couple bolt this year but mainly grew great, no protection needed. The leaves must taste like shite mind! Lost all the pak Choi, broccoli and most of the cauliflowers to bolting with the hot weather this year. Hoping my fennel is alright when I get back tomorrow. Need to prepare the ground for my winter onions and garlic weekend after next.

Any veg I can plant now my little veg patch is all clear now and the greenhouse has the last few tomatoes and chillies.
Or is it gave over till next spring ?

Garlic
Spring onions
Shallots
and also in October - Broad Beans - that will over-winter for an early crop in June next year.

Grown pumpkins for the first time, only got I massive one left . attempted to lift it today must weigh a couple of stone. How long will it keep growing as I don't want to howk it up yet.

Cabbages have turned out canny this year, same can’t be said about cauliflowers and broccoli.

Red cabbage now been pickled, got 6 jars from this one.

Savoy, no idea what the missus has planned for it.

Impressive size but personally i think they taste much better less than half that .
Once the outer leaves were taken off, they were about the size of ones you get in the shops. Don’t know what to do with the rest of them, think I’ll be giving some away.

Might have gone a tad "woody".
Give them a good boil or roast them.
I have definitely gone down the roasting route, usually when i have a casserole in to maximise energy.
Few fresh herbs , sprinkle brown sugar, black pepper, salt , splash of vinegar , ground ginger, garlic cloves. 3 hours slow , lovely ..

Sounds good. Presumably cut into wedges?

What have my fellow allotmenteering nerd friends got planned for this year.

Im just making some lists now will probably order some stuff on Sunday. All I have in so far are a few hundred onions they need thinking out now to grow, I’ve used sets the last 3 years but been wanting to grow from seed for a bit. I’ll be looking at 300 Red Barron and 300 white centurion this year, good variety that grow well for me under my conditions.

It’s 3 years now since we bought onions from a shop, these can als be grown well in tubs/pots etc if you don’t have much space, I had an old 30 litre potthat had 8 onions around the edge and 4 in the middle, they were probably the best outa the whole crop, try it and thank me later!

For potatoes I’m going with the ones below, as you might know I grown mine in 45 litre rectangle tubs that are raised bed style using euro pallets on their sides,
I’ll probably use Graham’s seeds again unless I find some local, that varies tbh.

First earlies - Charlotte 2 x10 seed potatoes.
First earlies - Maris Baird, I grow these every year, excellent potato

For second earlies I fancy a new one this year. Probably purchase 30/40 seed potatoes
Second earlies - vivaldi
Second earlies - Sagitta
I might also try some Elf.

My favourite time of the year this, I fking love when it starts turning, daffodils are appearing everywhere on the dog walking field, bluebells not be long after then we are on our way

Whilst in the farm shop a few weeks back I noticed a romsnesco Natalie and thought it looked cool as fuck do bought a pack of seeds, I’ll be trying them this year, lady in the shop said it’s like cauliflower/broccoli, having never tried it I thought why not…

That is all for now my green fingered brethren 🫡

I suspect our allotment will be under water currently. It'll take weeks for it to be in any sort of state to begin sorting for this year.

However, I agree that planning for the year is good fun.

I was just thinking this morning I should get started planning for the year and get some seeds ordered.

I often start leeks on an indoor windowsill this time of year and wanted some fresh basil the other day. I'm also lacking in fresh salad leaves so might get some away.

In early December I got out and dug over a couple of beds and did more tidying up than I generally do, and cleared most stuff out of the greenhouse. Usually the first weekend of the year is pulling all the dead plants out of there, tipping out the pots of dried compost. I'll see if I can get a few more beds dug over this month and be ready to start planting when it warms up a bit.
