The branded higher price ones are often the best in my experience. suttons as mentioned.

Where can i buy Sutton seeds in Sunderland ? B&Q ?

Some of the Chillis have started really well this year... hopefully a better season than the last two!
My padron peppers are doing well. Poor germination though for my Rocoto and Limone. I used saved seeds from the year before last so maybe that was the problem. I still will have enough plants though

I order online.

Credit to B&Q though, there are a few times I have picked up the odd packet of seeds from them and had good results. A couple of years ago, mice in the greenhouse dug out and ate any substantial sized seed. Peas, beans, sunflower and sweetcorn all suffered badly. I had plenty spare for the first three, and while I was in B&Q picked up some of their own brand sweetcorn as a last ditch attempt for that year. They germinated quickly and I got pretty good results.

Now I have propagator lids on everything but the slugs get in the vents. Until writing this post, I don't know why I have never thought of putting copper tape around the lids. I'm off to B&Q this weekend!

I've had some issues with certain varieties but feels like the ones which have germinated are flying

I probably should have been more careful about storing them. Basically they were in an envelope on the kitchen windowsill for 2 year lol. The Padron were from seeds saved from last year and nearly all germinated.

If I sow seeds in a plastic greenhouse, and put a bucket of water in the bottom, then go away for 2 weeks on holiday - do you think that would be ok for germinating everything?
Its a crap time to go away!!

It might do. If you can I'd move it into the shade and smaller plastic propagators will help keep moisture in. I use modular seed trays in propagators so if you do similar you could put 1cm or so of water in the bottom of the tray.

I can put it any amount of shade, yeah.

Truth is there is only a very few seed suppliers in the UK so most of the branded seeds are identical and all come from the same source supplier.
Premier Seeds Direct online are usually very good prices and (in most cases) the same seeds you will get elsewhere but just in foil without the fancy pictorial packaging. If you want the information from the pictorial envelopes you can get all that info online from Premier Seeds when you buy.

Question for all the experts .
Potting on tomatoes i've always nipped the first leaf bury that then when it's ready for the final pot on ,same again ,the theory being tomatoes grow roots on whatever part of the stem is below soil level and so stronger root network better plant/ crop.

Just watched a couple of videos on you tube ,one bloke done a plant at soil height v bury deep and the soil height one produced a better crop , some of the comments stated that it's wrong to bury them deep .
Just wondered what everyone does on here when potting on then onto the final pot ? soil height or nip and bury ? .

If I have bobbles on the stem that will form into roots given the chance, I tend to bury a reasonable amount of them, depending on how high they go.

I do cut off the lower leaf stems though, as the leaves drooping on the soil can add rot or disease to the plants.

I have ended up with blossom end rot on tomatoes and have had mixed results, but they have been so much better following what this bloke says:

I need to rewatch that to refresh my memory

Cheers, i always end up with blossom end or tomatoes splitting ,i thought blossom end was a disease but it's inconsistent watering which i know i am guilty of so need to try harder this year.

Just sorted myself a raised bed 8ft square , soil seems o.k but can i add anything to it to mix in before i put my veg in ?.I was thinking of scattering bonemeal or chicken manure pellets and digging it through.

My second question as i'm late to the game and too late for growing veg from seeds , i was going to buy the veg bag bulbs that you get in the shops( b&m / home bargains ), I'm looking at onion ,potatoes, carrots etc are these o.k ? good fesults/ crop ? and would i be ok putting them in next week after sorting the soil out as i would say we've had our last frost ?

I’m only going to put my first early potatoes in next week, second earlier a week after and main crop at Easter. Will be putting onions in in a couple of weeks. Will be starting some veg from seed this weekend so I would say it’s not too late.

Most of the seeds I have say March/April for sowing. I have only started about half of mine.

If you start too early then it can be too early to plant out (I had a frost last week and it was really cold Wednesday night), then they go leggy in the pots.
