Can anyone recommend a legit company/person who who will remove rubbish from an allotment?
I've seen them out and about - 3.5t low load cage tippers - in Sunderland.

That's why I don't ask for it  It's all about the red cabbage, onion and Chilli peppers

My Dad used to grow bits and had an allotment, but I tried a few years back and cost a bloody fortune, with crap results and spent more time seeing slugs and insects and all sorts eating the buggers . I get it's more of a hobby and probably cheaper the more established you get your garden, but it was too much hassle for me
You can't beat tomatoes from the greenhouse or some fresh new potatoes straight out of the garden, but you are right it is not hassle free and if you are not careful if you grow on a small scale it can end up being surprisingly expensive if you keep a tally of all the costs, especially if you go to these big garden centres. Saving your own seed does help as well.
Im going to do a bit of Guerilla gardening this week. The plot is behind a fence and faces east with some trees casting a bit of shade. At the minute it’s basically blackberries. I want to clear it out and plant some sort of veg. What should I start with and how should I prepare it?

If it has got / had blackberries on it then you will have to work really hard digging it through and getting rid of every last bit of blackberry root. Otherwise they will come back .

Yep - expecting that to keep me busy!

Made a start. It’s a bit of a mess with some building materials dumped on it - mostly big lumps of polystyrene which I assume they use for underfloor insulation. Load of soil has been dumped which has caused on old wire mesh fence to collapse so I’ll have to dig that out. Plenty of brambles and branches to clear out so I don’t think I’ll get any planting done before the autumn but it’s got bags of potential.

This bit is just wasteland and maybes about 40 square meters. Just need to work out what will grow in the conditions
Decent sized plot that. The balance is between easy success and value for money. Spud wise I’d go pentland javelin or something interesting for summer as well as some stuff you know will do well- runner beans, tomatoes etc and then go for things that cost more to buy in shops, I’ve always fancied asparagus and globe artichoke but haven’t got the space.
Perhaps a couple of fruit trees?

Now I’ve actually got into it it’s more like 100 square meters. Plenty of clearing to do but I should be ready to plant stuff in autumn for overwintering. It’s between a row of trees/shrubs and a fence that both run north/south so it’s pretty shady but I can clear a lot of the overhanging branches out which will help.

start clearing and preparing for planting in the Autumn, to harvest Spring next year. Brassicas to grow from seed = Spring Cabbage, I recommend Durham Early, follow sowing instructions and aim to plant out early October. Plant out loads about 1 foot apart and by February pull out every other one as small greens. Purple Sprouting Broccoli planted same time will give you a crop after around 9 months. Australian varieties of cauliflower planted with spring cabbage will crop from following March. Japanese Onion sets will also give you onions early summer following year.

Allotment gardening can be all the year round but you need to talk to the older gardeners on your site as theyll be a mine of information.

Bit more clearing done today - and another bin bag of polystyrene! Can just about walk across the plot now.
