Calling SMB veg growers

I bought a Kebab the other week and as i am a regular, he asked if I wanted the usual salad choice (No tomatoes and no lettuce) but i said "No, whack some Tomatoes on mate, you never know if you're going to see one again for a while these days !"

That's why I don't ask for it :lol: It's all about the red cabbage, onion and Chilli peppers

My Dad used to grow bits and had an allotment, but I tried a few years back and cost a bloody fortune, with crap results and spent more time seeing slugs and insects and all sorts eating the buggers . I get it's more of a hobby and probably cheaper the more established you get your garden, but it was too much hassle for me :lol:

I just got the bug after growing some seeds about 15 years ago, and I really enjoy it.

Getting owld marra🤣🤣🤣
 
Mrs asked me to grow some Sweet Williams and Wallflowers. Did it, and when they came out in the bed, I thought "fuck me, I did that"
Following year, few Toms and Cucumbers.
Following year put a couple of raised beds in, and did Tatties to break up the soil, got a 8x6 greenhouse, grew Corn, peas, beans, f***ing allsorts, and most of it worked.
Hooked totally now, and I absolutely love it mate.😁

I grew taties one year - there were so many I had to store sack loads of them in hessian sacks in my dads shed as we could not store all of them.

They were absolutely chocka block full of tatie.

It's a healthy hobby marra. I remember my Dads greenhouse as a kid and the smell from the Tomato plants was immense. Mind bloody Ants everywhere :lol: My mam always said Strawberries were forced in shop and had nee taste. You don't half taste the difference and the smell with freshly grown ones mind

And fantastic to pick fresh and eat straight away. Raw peas straight from the pod too. The there are things that you just can’t buy. I grow tomatillos and have grown a few different types of squashes over the years. Was growing gem squashes for a while, currently do amazonkia, which is like a small pumpkin. Lettuce in a trug outside the back door, always crisp and fresh.

You said about cost, getting going does cost, but these days with well established beds, my own compost, I pretty much only buy seeds and slug repellent. What they cost, I probably save on strawberries and tomatoes, making everything else ‘free’.

I had terrible problems for years with slugs and snails. Never see one now. They all disappeared when next door got a pond. I do see the frogs though.

I grow peas just to munch when pottering around. Gardeners perks I call it.

Fresh corn in September. Get the water boiling then pick the cobs, and straight into the hot water. 30 minutes, and you will never taste anything better man. Literally 30 seconds between plant and pot. Amazing.

Salivating now just thinking about it😁😁😁

It must have been all the sun, but I had an excellent year for corn last year. Always been a bit hit and miss, load of kernels not developed, but last year I could have sold them in a good quality farmers market.
 
Im going to do a bit of Guerilla gardening this week. The plot is behind a fence and faces east with some trees casting a bit of shade. At the minute it’s basically blackberries. I want to clear it out and plant some sort of veg. What should I start with and how should I prepare it?

My in laws have claimed a chunk of land behind their house, quite substantial and enough for a decent allotment!
