Calling SMB veg growers

It looks to me like the pipe down the centre is designed to do no more than to get the plant to creep up, so you would just irrigate from the base. I have never seen strawberry plants creep that far though, and certainly not in the upward direction, but it seems like it is a tried and tested method.

For me the tricky bit would be keeping the birds off of them, because they really stand out against the pipe. I am going to be trying to encourage mustard leaves to grow nearby, as happened by accident last year. When they bolted and went huge it seemed to frighten the birds off.

There are different ways of doing them. In that one the smaller central pipe has small holes in throughout the length and acts as irrigation once you fill the top, not sure how good it would be though, personally think the bottom ones would get too much and the top ones not enough.

The plants grow out of the big side holes then drop downwards, I think similar to how strawberries in hanging baskets would go

Depends what you want, first earlies, second earlies or main crop? I have Javelin first earlies chitting atm.
 
Potatoes, Leeks, Beetroot, Onions, Cabbage and Brocolli and lettuce in those big carrier bags for me. Don't usually start until around April
 
Moved our pigs a few weeks ago and I’m doing to plant 1/2 acre of pumpkin seeds in the turned up ground and hope for the best. There’s going to be all sorts growing in there after all the fruit and veg they have eaten in the last 12 months

Charlottes for me. Reliable, good cropper and early enough to avoid blight. Good for salad, new potatoes and wedges...

Depends if you're in a high risk area for blight
 
Just ordered me new shed yesterday. Won't be doing nowt until that's sorted. All my veg areas are covered anyway so nee weeding. The grounds soaking at the minute.

May be daft, but say you rolled up a length of backing wallpaper and had that running down the middle of the pipe (would be a faff) would it hold the water and continue to water the plants?
 
I still haven't done anything this year, desperately need to at least get seed tatties ordered to start chitting, last predicted frost isn't until 3rd week of april though so still a bit time yet

Me as well
Still too cold for tatties... Not even bought mine yet.
I don't chit any more.... Haven't for the past 3 years and still get good crops

Got mine chitting but I’ve put them in without in the past and still had decent results.

Bought a few blueberry bushes from Poundland as an experiment and a couple of rhubarb crowns from Wilko
