British-Asian Ref tonight

You’re amongst friends, you’re free to speak your mind.
If you really believe that no Asians want to become referees and that’s the only reason then you’re very silly.

You’re American (iirc), you see societal issues. You see discrimination. You see lack of opportunity for parts of society.

Why are the vast majority* of Wall Street bankers white male?

Hint: it’s not because women, Hispanics or African Americans simply don’t want to do

*it’s changing slowly.

So it’s due to racism?
You’re correct in saying that there’s discrimination over here but it’s not limited to the groups you mention. We have some serious societal issues for sure. They cover all groups equally. Not sure if you have any DEI programs but those are mandating new hires be based on ethnicity, skin color, gender etc.
I'm a white male and have worked blue collar jobs my whole life alongside those groups and not one of us would ever have been chosen to work on Wall St unless it was to push a broom. My wife and I worked very hard to get our children an education to ensure that I would be the last of the ditch diggers in our family. They all own their own homes and not one ounce of that is down to skin color, it’s down to hard work.
Sorry for the rant, mate.

Saying that racism exists doesn’t mean of that isn’t true

It will be down to a multitude of factors, some of which will be choice (British Asians are more into cricket I find, but there is a thread about the racism at Yorkshire that is worth reading on that topic)

Some of it will be racism. Junior referees get horrible abuse (regardless of race as well)
Some of it will be lack of role models
Some of it will be lack of opportunity

But to suggest it’s all down to lack of desire is frankly rubbish

Just for all the racists tonight I'd thought I'd add some context.

British Asian is a term created by white politicians in Whitehall for the purpose of putting people into a wide pot.
It includes lots of different nationalities, but it's lazy and keeps the data down.
I don't want to be collated into a group who are 2nd / 3rd /4th generation Iranians, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankan's, Afghans and Pakistani's among others.
Sikh's don't really like the term.
To mess up the census, I fill in British, because I am.

I did want the ref to do well, as it shows Asian kids, teens, and more importantly parents that there's other careers apart from a corner shop or going to Uni and becoming a Doctor or Accountant.
Society, and jobs and roles should be representative of the demographic.
Most of the top jobs are held by white men, its just a fact of life. For years they have been trying to add women to the boards of top companies, whether they were the best person for the job or not. Women are now getting there on merit, as they are just as capable intellectually.
I'm not really down with every game on TV having at least 1 female commentator and pundit. If it was women's footy then I'd understand, but these female pundits have not played the men's game which is at a much higher elite level and physically different.

Anyway FTM and Sunderland Till I DIe
Well said, mate, As far as I'm concerned, you're 100% British, and perfectly entitled to put that in the census IMO. Your ethnicity or skin colour is irrelevent to your nationality, though I'm always interested in people's ancestors' backgrounds, cultures etc. if they want to discuss them. I always feel awkward about asking, so I don't!

My belief is that talk of 'minorities', 'British Asians' and so on is patronising, divisive and counterproductive. We're all in this together, we all want happy lives, I don't understand why our superficial differences are constantly used to pigeonhole us. Racists will be racists, but they are the exception these days and society has rightly decided that they will not be tolerated. It's taken far too long, I must add, but it's progress nonetheless.

I can't help but think that there's an agenda in all this, divide and rule, perhaps? I wonder where we'd be if people in power stopped banging on about 'minorities' (I dislike that word), Blacks, British Asians, Muslims and so on. We're people, ffs! Human beings. It's said that very young children don't see colour or racial differences if they mix with each other. It's only as they get older that they're bombarded with race baiting nonsense and their differences are highlighted. It's tragic.

I hope I haven't said anything there that's presumptuous or false, just the thoughts of an armchair observer who's probably way off the mark!
