In my opinion.

Unusually damp australian weather, thus far. Should aid the faster bowlers.

Although not the main reason, it allows Ben Stokes to prioritise his batting over his bowling, as first innings runs are massive.

Thoughts?

A bit of a lottery with the weather, lack of prep, Covid, etc. I'm sorted of tempted by the idea of an extra bowler with the lack of overs in their legs - possibly comes down to a trade off between Bairstow, Leach and Woakes. I personally think Wood has to play as a point of difference bowler at the Gabba.

I can’t see any argument for playing Overton over Anderson or Woakes personally. Or for Lawrence over Pope

5 of thebatters pick themselves imo.

Is Pope not in with as much chance as Lawrence or Bairstow ?

Bit more bounce in the gabba surface, more suited to the taller men.

Jimmy and Woakes to return for the day/night test.

As for Dan Lawrence/Ollie Pope. There isn’t much to separate those two, imo. Both good characters. Toss of a coin.

Only if Buttler has an issue, surely.

I think it’s time Pope or Lawrence were given a proper run as frontline batsmen.
Bairstow at 6, Buttler is keeper at 7.

Harsh on Pope but he has played a canny bit for England. Lawrence isn’t a test player yet although he did well with the Lions in Aus last year

Bairstow only comes in, if Buttler has an issue for me. I just don’t see him as a genuine test match batsmen.

I would have a spinner pretty much every time.

Hills I'm not prepared to die on:

Hameed/Crawley/Lawrence/Lees/Cook/Me/Other
Bairstow/Pope
Wood/Woakes

Burns
Hameed
Lawrence
Root
Stokes
Pope
Buttler

Leach
Wood

Just which 4 bowlers to pick then
Definitely preserve Anderson for adelaide.

Whether we go in with a spinner or not, is up for debate.

My argument is, as a spinner, you really have to be in the swann, lyon mould, to have any success in Australia.

CBA watching Pope get a pretty but ineffective (or pretty ineffective) 20 or 30 in our first innings followed by a duck in the inevitable second innings collapse.

At least Bairstow has a bit about him along with the comedy value of everyone kicking off when he lets one through the gate.

YJB for me.
