Boycott Qatar


There comes a time when most people say 'enough' in any given situation. I think that time is arriving now, or at least I hope so. The moral gymnastics being performed by people who just want to watch the world cup are exactly the same as those being performed by Newcastle supporters to excuse the actions of the Saudis. As a Newcastle supporter myself I find it hard to stomach the hypocrisy. People up in arms about Newcastle and KSA (and rightly so, it's disgraceful) but the very same people will be supporting their team in the World Cup. If you really want to do something then boycott this tournament. 6500 worker deaths during the construction. Many workers have been left unpaid. There are umpteen tales of workers having their passports taken from them upon arrival in Qatar and no chance of getting them returned until they complete the job. They are being held in captivity to all intents and purposes. At the end of the contract they will be paid (if they are lucky) and given their passports back, then booted out of the country. Most of the workers are Indian and Fillipino. The exploitation is horrendous and there have been many suicides as a result. The World Cup should never have been given to them in the first place, but once it was then it should have been used as an opportunity to highlight and change these conditions. It's absolutely the right thing to do to turn our backs on this tournament. People like Beckham, already obscenely rich, taking another 100m or thereabouts to cover it all up with a bit of gloss are repulsive. The beautiful game my arse.
 
I'm totally against this World Cup...blatter and plattini got a lot to awnser for... But I know I will end up watching it just like a summer one..

Morning all!

Had an interesting chat with some mates last night about a potential fan led boycott of Qatar 2022. Writing this really just to gauge people’s opinions and to see if there would ever be sufficient support for it to be a realistic option.

The horrific human right abuses of workers getting the stadiums ready in time for the tournament are well documented and in many cases amounted to modern day slavery. Many lost their lives.

Could we collectively say enough is enough and ask the question to what depths is society willing to sink in order to promote the game we all love? These questions won’t be asked loudly at the top with so much money involved. What a huge statement it would make if broadcasters and sponsors were boycotted during the games. Something that could potentially trigger similar movements in areas other than football where corruption and human right abuses are rife.

I’d imagine for most, not watching England in a major tournament is unthinkable. Would an option be for one match to be boycotted? Something everyone could get on board with to send a strong message. Or at the very least show the families of those who died building the stadiums that there are people on the other side of the world who give a shit.

Like I said this isn’t a call to arms. Just a way of gaging opinion. If it is generally positive there’s no reason other forums can’t be contacted to see if something meaningful can be put together. With OTIB leading the way!

I was up the golf club in a jumper last night pal, it is definitely on the cool side. Those 10pm games are going to be very nippy.
 
I love the world cups, but won't be watching absolute disgrace it's being held there.

Once again the hypocritocal companies will be screening it and avoiding the real issues of corruption and human rights issues. They can fuck off as well.

Someone should ask Gareth why they are happy to play in Qatar in relation to overtly political stances in many other areas.

Or will he and the FA display NUFC type hypocrisy and say “it’s all about the football” and “if we go it will make everything okay in the world.”

Apart from a hideous human rights record, what about over 6k workers lost building the stadia?
