Boycott criticizes Cook....

The younger generation seem to have no idea how difficult batting was on uncovered pitches. In 1968, Underwood bowled Australia out at The Oval in about 2 hours.

Seem to remember him doing it against Pakistan as well, early 70's. They were going along nicely until it rained, then bowled them out very quickly when play resumed on his favourite drying wicket

Another typically forthright view from Geoffrey on TMS just now:

I don't think Ravi Bopara's going to be a regular Test player. The chairman of Essex didn't like it when I told him that, even after those three hundreds against West Indies. I think we've got better young players coming through - Yorkshire's Joe Root is going to play for England, remember the name. And young Bairstow. Adil Rashid's a lovely lad, but he's not got a great thinking cricket brain.:-)

I have 2 words for you to rearrange into a well known phrase: "pitches" and "uncovered".

How many tests did Boycott play on uncovered wickets, for all his hot air on the subject? They were well in place in the mid 70's and he didn't suddenly become a faster run scorer.

Boycott prattles on about all the bouncers he had to face but never had to bat against reverse swing, the doosra etc.

The game is just different and Boycott is a grumpy old sod. An entertaining one I grant you but a grumpy old sod all the same.

There is hardly a quality bowler in world cricket right now outside of England.

Thats a fair post showing the other side of the coin. Batting was far more difficult then though - it wasnt just uncovered pitches but also value for your shots. I was watching highlights of the 81 Ashes and Bothan aside it was amazing how many 2s and 3s batsmen got instead of obvious boudaries.

Boycotts average IIRC was around 47 which would be worth late 50s in this era IMO.
