Borthwick & Tredwell Called into the Test Squad

Those are the concerns I'd have too.

Being selfish for Durham too we'd be fucked if Borthwick and Stokes were centrally contracted next year

Nah, seriously though - it'd be absolutely class if both were to prosper for England.

Best of luck to both of them too :)

I am actually considering seeing what price I can get on Durham to be relegated. Don't get me wrong I hope they do well as a fan and think they will probably be around mid table even without Stokes, but if Borthwick and Onions end up being away for a while too I think we could struggle and there would be decent value there.

still got good enough players in colly mustard wood rushworth to stay away from trouble don't think borthwick will get many England games either

That's the spirit. Everyone's tip to go down last season and all.

I'm not tipping them to go down, just thinking of getting some value. Personally think there is about a 1 in 6 chance of it going belly up and being relegated. If I can get 10/1 or better I will back it.

Looking at it, they are never going to play 2 spinners at melbourne, so unless Borthwick is going to play over Monty there would be no point in making him available before the sydney test. All signs look promising to Borthwick making his debut probably batting at 8 with 7-8 overs of leg spin. The outside outside very outside bet is that they play him at 3 ;)

England will be looking at just making sure they avoid defeat at melbourne, Borthwick greatly strengthens the batting and fielding especially in comparison to Monty and the talk is that the pitch is green so spin may not play that much of a part anyway. They would definitely be looking at him to develop in a similar manner to steve smith in a batting sense.

Puff. Bookies rarely give Durham respect, you will get better value backing us to win.

His bowling is barely good enough for FC Cricket IMO. Great batsman and may make it solely as a batter in a few years (with some part time spin as a good option) but his bowling has a long long way to go. Good luck to the lad though, genuinely hope he does well.

Bowling average of 31, strike rate of 50 and an economy of 3.7.

That is more than adequate for FC cricket and when you consider he plays at one of the least spin friendly grounds, that isnt a bad record at all. Id probably agree that he probably isnt a shoe in Test match spinner but his spin is more than good enough at county level.

edit: his FC bowling record is actually better than Swann's. Obviously hasnt been doing anywhere near the same length of time but just as a marker

Well, it looks like we will need a new three so you never know. I would also point out the Aussies packed their side with right handers to go after swann, a right handed leg spinner could be just the ticket, along with Monty's left arm off spin[DOUBLEPOST=1387814186][/DOUBLEPOST]
Not really at 9/2!
Is that current odds? Will rise if stokes, borthwick and onions get central contracts,

Some good posts above. It would be a massive blow to lose both Stokes and Borthwick but I'd be chuffed to see him do well. If he does play I think it's just as important he gets some runs, there's places up for grabs in the team at the minute

Great to see Borthwick get the call up to the squad but i think the emergence of his big mate Stokes scuppers any chance of him playing. Whatever the side is Stokes will bat at 6 and Prior or Bairstow at 7, that leaves 4 spots for bowlers. I can't see them playing 2 spinners and 3 seamers at the MCG, firstly they have not got two reliable enough opening bowlers with Andersons current form and Broads injury doubts, Finn and Rankin are not trusted and Bresnan is clearly not up to speed yet. It would also be a huge risk to play Borthwick ahead of Monty as the only spinner especially against a rampant Aussie side, and quite simply he is not as good a bowler. His best chance would have been as a batting allrounder in the no 6 spot with with Monty and three front line firing seamers, but Stokes looks like he has got that position for a good few tests matches.

Also he's taken 110 wickets at 31 at FC level by the age of 23, not too shabby like

I can see them picking Borthwick and 4 seamers including Stokes. Spin I wouldn't think will play a big part in Melbourne.

That means playing him ahead of Monty who is clearly a better bowler and still has a good few years left as an England player. Borthwick would add a lot more with his batting and fielding. There has been a lot of people on here who have said how wrong it is that Onions is not playing in Australia when he is clearly a better bowler than Rankin Tremlett or a half fit Bresnan. But surely that same argument applies to Monty over Borthwick if you are going to play one spinner it should be your best bowler not a batting allrounder who has the potential to be a test class allrounder.

It does indeed. In Monty's test career he has always done well when selected as a second spinner which is invariably always in favourable conditions. If the pitch has turn and bounce then Monty is your man but as a number one and only spinner on flat pitches where he doesn't perform well and he can't bat and can't field he becomes a waste of a position IMO. You have to ask yourself can Monty bowl Australia out on a flat pitch at Melbourne? If the answer is no then for me you go for your 4 seamers and make some overs up with Borthwick and Root which strengthens the team with the bat and in the field.

If Borthwick is a test bowler there is hope for us all. He could possibly make it as a bat though.

The fact that they called Tredwell up for Sydney suggests to me that they view Panesar and Tredwell as their first choice spinners, Borthwick has just been called up to provide cover for any illness/injury to Monty as he was available in time for this test match and Tredwell wasn't.

But I hope he plays for England for the next 10 years, don't think his bowling's good enough at the minute and the Aussies would get after him, which might actually work to his advantage.

If last seasons odds are anything to go by, I reckon you will get about evens.

Odd that people are saying that he did well at youth level because he was challenged and moved up quickly yet they don't want him to play at test level yet. What have we got to lose? Sometimes you don't find out how good someone is until you give them a chance and he won't be bowling many overs anyway.
