with immediate effect. Borthwick arrives Monday in contention for the 4th Test and Tredwell will arrive during the boxing day test and is available for Sydney.

Perhaps Monty won't be playing the last two tests after all

That is all

Really hope Borthwick doesn't play. His batting has been great the past year but his bowling is really up and down. To be thrown into an Ashes Boxing Day Test 3-0 down already could be a masterstroke, but the likelihood is they will target him and potentially knock him back a few years.

Massive ask on the bowling front as he hasnt bowled much this year. But the pitches in oz suit him more. Haway scotty

Check out this Sunderland Echo newspaper snippet from about 9 years ago with a couple of mentions of Scott, even then me must have been outstanding

Absolutely mental to call him up. Nowhere near ready and I hope he doesn't play. Play Monty in the Boxing Day Test and Tredwell in the 5th. Neither inspire confidence, but it's better than Borthwick being targeted like Kerrigan was and - as mentioned - being set back.

He was, I played against him at that level before admitting I was crap and giving it up. Really pleased for him, but yeah, it's hard to put into words how much better than the rest he was.

No issue with him being around the squad

But he will get beakered if he plays

It isn't that mental like, he is a quality player.

They've called him up with a view to playing him otherwise they would've left him in Sydney. His bowling probably isnt ready but with Stokes giving us 4 Seamers they're probably looking along the lines of Borthwick doing a Steve Smith type role with Root bowling some overs as well. Not sure in what order but I think Bairstow, Borthwick & Stokes will be batting 6,7 & 8 in this test not sure in what order you'd think Stokes would stay at 6.

What worries me is that he has been brought in as a replacement for the plastic mag.

They are swapping a bowling allrounder for a batting allrounder.

Even Will Smith was getting a bowl before Borthwick last season so I consider it to be fairly worrying...

I think Stokes gives them a whole load of options like, if they could somehow fit Borthwick in they would be a really flexible side, as he really can bat.

I think the comparison with Steve Smith isn't really valid like, Borthwick can genuinely bowl.

Probably is a tad early but why not have a look at him, quite exciting times for England, that's how they should be viewing it anyway.

I would also certainly give Bairstow a go at Melbourne.

True he is definitely a better bowler than Steve Smith, was just more thinking about the amount of overs he will be bowling. I think the seamers will be doing the bulk of the work at Melbourne.

some said the same of Stokes as a batsman

His bowling is barely good enough for FC Cricket IMO. Great batsman and may make it solely as a batter in a few years (with some part time spin as a good option) but his bowling has a long long way to go. Good luck to the lad though, genuinely hope he does well.

I hope he plys

Nail on the head. Borthwick hasn't been called up to bowl 14 over a day like Swann might. Him and Root would maybe bowl 10 overs between them with 4 seamers playing. I'm excited for the lad and expect he will play.

I know Scott's dad George quite well and have often talked to him about when Scott was a kid. One of the things that helped him develop, in George's opinion, was the fact that Eppleton challenged him all the time, moving him up into senior sides when he was just a bairn. I'm sure he said that Scott played first team cricket when he was 12 or 13. Clearly the lad must have had the ability at that age or as the article implies maybe Eppleton just didnt have enough players so he had to move up.

My lad plays for a NTSCL side. He's only 12 but its highly likely that due to there being a lack of players at the club he may well play 2nd team cricket next year. He's a talented lad and the smaller clubs give youngsters the opportunity to develop faster if they have the ability. Its one of the reason that I took him to the club he plays for. The bigger clubs have too many players and there are fewer development opportunities.

Lads need to play as much cricket as possible to fully develop (needs to be well managed of course) not training 3 times a week. Once winter nets are over the emphasis of the club that my lad currently plays for is playing games, not nets.

Chuffed for Scott like. He's a canny lad (got tickets for us for Lords last year - Durham v Middlesex) and George is sound as a pound.[DOUBLEPOST=1387798558][/DOUBLEPOST]

Interestingly Lehmann will know all about Scott as the lad was at the Lehmann cricket school a winter ago. Warne knows all about Scott as well and helped him with his bowling.

cracking post particularly RE juniors. Far too many kids signed on for the big clubs junior sections but not particularly guaranteed a game or a chance to bat or bowl with regularity. It sees a lot of lads drop out of cricket altogether when they reach 15 or so. Ive a feeling a lot of parents like seeing their kids knock about in club gear and telling their mates who their kids play for regardless of whether they pick up a bat or bowl a football down a hill.

Re Borthwick - it was absolutely obvious to me that he was going to be at least a county standard player when he was 14. Think his maiden senior ton was against the Harbour when he was at Phili. Apart from being dropped on zero, he was flawless throughout his innings.

Those are the concerns I'd have too.

Being selfish for Durham too we'd be fucked if Borthwick and Stokes were centrally contracted next year

Nah, seriously though - it'd be absolutely class if both were to prosper for England.

Best of luck to both of them too :)
