Again, this is just my opinion, but the reason I suspect Liverpool had borini in the US party is due to the financing of the deal. I imagine the club are pulling together the funds/contracts to fund the deal and it's taking a bit of time.

In case something goes wrong, Liverpool can't afford to not have him fit and hence he is still doing their preseason.
