Danny Welbeck scored the winner as Sunderland leapfrogged Bolton into sixth place with a hard-earned win.

Welbeck headed home his fifth goal in six games after Jussi Jaaskelainen had denied a Darren Bent shot.

Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon produced a remarkable one-handed save to deny Zat Knight a close-range equaliser.

Welbeck also struck the outside of the post for the home side, while Bolton threatened late on through Gary Cahill and substitute Ivan Klasnic.

Best save I've ever seen. For some reason I watched it on the tele at home despite having a season card at the time, can't remember why.

As mentioned Gordon’s save was probably the best I’ve ever seen. To turn the ball over the bar at such close range seems to defy all common sense.

Watched it with Podgy in Perth in the middle of the Ashes tour. Podgy being Podgy had the entire bar eating out of his hand: local Aussies and bourgeois Barmy Army visitors.

RIP lad: a true character and as good a Sunderland fan as you will ever meet.
