It's not genetic, it's economic. Many black people have faced diminished educational and work opportunities due to racism and discrimination, as a result sports have offered an opportunity for many of them to escape poverty when they had little other chances in life. This is primarily why there have been so many black footballers and athletes in the UK, France and from wider Africa.

It's both.

This. Socio-political reasons not lions in the jungle. Hate to be pc and all that.

Obviously I'm well aware that in this day and age of offended individuals I'm running the risk.....but why are black people more than anyone else very good at sprinting etc and long distance running....obviously over the years I've watched lots of 100/200 metres finals and they're all black....so apart from Alan Wells got me thinking....is it a DNA thing ?

Im going to be banned aren't I :( it was honestly just an observation ...there must be something in their make-up

haven't read the thread so could have been mentioned, but Michael Johnson (the sprinter) theorised that blacks from the Caribbean and America mostly have ancestors who were brought over as slaves, the slaves were the biggest and toughest selected from west Africa as they were to do back breaking work, then the weakest of those strong ones died on the boat, then more of the weakest would have died in the fields in the U.S etc leaving a pretty strong bunch of folk which may have had an effect on their offspring

There's a genetic element that can't be overlooked imo, but the sociological aspect is important. Look at heavyweight boxing for example. Americans have had some superb heavies over the years, even until relatively recent times. But now athletes aren't interested when they can become a millionaire without playing a professional game yet.

Like most other things it is a combination of factors.
  • Genetic- bone structure/muscle fibre
  • Slavery-best physical specimens taken
  • Socio-eco- as above
  • Opportunity- access to tracks/training
Most of the best sprinters have come from American/Caribbean blacks which are the descendants of slaves where only the strongest survive. They generally do better than people from West Africa who don't have the same access to facilities.

Most top long distance runners are not of negro stock and generally come from the Cushite/Hamitic group of people who are more slender in structure.

was about to post the same thing, was a canny watch and interesting theory ... similar theory why certain african countries produce the best marathon runners as they descend from tribes that were nomadic and always on the move , could all be bollocks mind you

Edit - why most boxers are black ? yet never see black swimmers in olympics ?

The word athlete can cover a large variety of sporting events, as you say always plenty of black athletes whether it be football or track and field etc. Swimmers are athletes as well, I have always wondered why it is that you rarely see any black swimmers.

Imagine thinking they have more twitch muscles because of socio reasons  The physical advantage is largely due to slavery.

Out of the top 3 p4p boxers (according to boxrecs algorithm) I think maybe 4 of the top 10 are black.

Dr Herb Elliott, doctor to the Jamaican Olympic team, added: 'Only the most aggressive and fiercest slaves ended up in Jamaica'
Jamaica is a better case than Africa because they have a higher ratio of sportsmen and women.

It's not as much to do with race as a kind of (un)natural selection from the slave trade.

The real question is why are most Olympic swimmers white ;)

Yet white, middle eastern and Chinese people largely dominate powerlifting, Strongman and weightlifting.

I think that's due to other factors tbh. Powerlifting and strongman are predominantly white sports but not for a lack of black athletes that would be very successful. If there was more money in powerlifting and strongman, the percentage of top level black athletes would increase rapidly imo.
