Bid rejected for Clarke

I fully agree with that mate. All was brilliant business. I just think Clarke is that good at this level, it'a a hell of a job to find a replacement but then, that's what we are set-up to do
I think that part of the set up is there for protection, rather than it being the main intent. I know some would no doubt twist this into some sort of narrative regarding a lack of ambition or penny pinching. Personally I just see it as dealing with reality. If we recruit well our players will generate interest. Sometimes that interest will be too much to fight off, depending on league position and interested club etc. If we can’t keep a player happy then at least we’ll be well placed to get a good fee to reinvest.

Speakman has stated that this seasons aim is automatic promotion. That clearly would not sound likely if we were to get to the end of August minus Stewart, Clarke and Diallo and without like for like replacements for each of them.

For now I'm staying glass almost full that they will be true to their word, meaning we will be stronger than last season.
He didn’t say automatics, mind. It was more that he’s not satisfied with ‘just participating’ in the playoffs.

I can't argue with that at all mate. We've come a long way with Premier League clubs wanting our players as opposed to having to loan them to League Two, just to get a bit off the wage bill.
I think it'll be a massive job to replace him but, they got him, Amad and Stewart etc in the first place.

Didn't he say so in that club interview they put out after the play offs.

Not really if it's what im thinking of, it was poorly worded and meant little in my opinion. Wishy-washy about "not being happy at getting in the playoffs." I took that as we expect to be challenging / getting in the playoffs, others have taken it differently.

It was a pretty careless throw-away comment I think.

Throw away comment? He was being interviewed in his capacity as Head Of Every f***ing Thing To Do With Football at SAFC.

Can you recall what he said word for word mate? .Seemed massive inference to top 2
Nah, but I remember questioning the general consensus about on here at the time. All hinged on being ‘not satisfied’ with just making it to the playoffs I think. In context it read like just getting into the playoffs wasn’t enough. If we’re in them we’d be expecting to be a serious challenger.

Clarke cost us about £3m, if we sell him we need to be spending about £5m on the replacement.(that's how Brentford do it)
