How much? Best make? Best to buy from?

SD have kukaburra and slazenger.

Anything better? Would rather buy decent and buy once than the £11 bats from SD.
 

How old? Soft or hard ball?

I bought the bairn the Slazengers size 5 from SD and its absolutely fine for softball cricket. They just abuse them and outgrow them in no time.

Slazenger bat (iirc it's the V500) feels a little on the femmer side for hard ball.

I'd check out Decathlon at Team Valley or Just sports on Clayton Street in Newcastle and get something in the 50-100 quid region.
