What this opens my eyes to is how unblessed we’ve generally been at centre back, even in the Reid days compared to other parts of the team that were very strong.
Bould clearly the best, but it was short lived due to his age. Think he only played 19 times. Thome was decent but he didn’t really pull up trees anywhere else and had poor distribution, and it was also short lived. Similar can be said of Butler who only had 1 season with us in the Premier League. Later on Jonny Evans was obviously very good and went on to have a good career, but he was only a loanee.
Of the CBs we had during the likes of the Bruce, O’Neill, Poyet, Allardyce eras, the likes of Mensah, O’Shea, Kaboul and Kone stand out but again all 4 were either very short lived, riddled with injuries or past their best in the case of O’Shea. We also generally struggled like fuck through those years.
I’d go with:
Sorensen, Makin, Bould, O’Shea/Kaboul, Gray
