Whatever happens tomorrow, Ben should be in the England team at six for the next test.

I know his batting form has been patchy this season, but it is improving and he is clearly a test class batsman in the making. Johnny Bairstow looks a little lost and lacking in technique outside his off stump right now and you would think Ben would get at least as many runs.

And then there is Stokes' bowling which has made a quantum leap in the last year. He would be a boon for England and help take the strain off the four man bowling attack. He is the cricketer England don't have. The management might think the team doesn't really need an all rounder at the moment and in fairness we have done pretty well without one, but any team can be improved by having a guy who can do two jobs.

If it was a question of dislodging or keeping out an obviously proven player then the chance would probably not be worth taking. But it isn't. Bopara could possibly do this job, although his time might have gone and he would lack Stokes' penetration as a bowler.

It won't happen, and if it did it would be bad for Durham, as once England get Stokes in the team a central contract won't be long in coming. But Stokes should play.

Was a discussion on Sky Sports today regarding Stokes, can't remember who mentioned it but they were saying words to the effect that the English management want him pushing on so he can slot in at 6 as a bowler/batsman

Peter Hayter suggested it on Cricket Writers on TV. He also suggested Stokes may be a reformed character as well now.

He is never a top 6 international player yet.

Maybe not. But neither is Bairstow, and Taylor looked short last year. But Stokes can really bowl now, and this fact can take the pressure off his batting.

You only have to look at Stokes now to see how hard he has worked. He looks a totally different specimen compared to the lad of two years ago.

He won't play but he should.

Say what?

A complete disaster area with the bat this season and has been comfortably out bowled by Onions.

He shouldn't be anywhere near the Test team.

He still is mate, about 5'6

Stoke's isn't good enough to get in as a bowler alone nor is he good enough to bat at 6. Yet, there's no place for him in the side with the current make up of the team (6 batsmen, 4 bowlers I mean)

His 4day batting has been horrific this season. I know Bresnan isn't a top class bowler but he's streets ahead of Stokes with the ball atm - sorry.

I'd have Stokes as a shoe in for ODI cricket but he really needs to get his finger out for DCCC

TBH I'd drop Prior, give Bairstow the gloves & bring in another bowler.... the batting that Broad + Bresnan + Swann give you means we can afford to do that imho.

You would drop Prior and leave Bairstow in?

I doubt Bairstow will be in the line up for the first test in Australia at Brisbane. Just a personal opinion he looks a bit short of quality at this level. I think he will get found out on the quicker bouncy wickets over there.

I am pleased to find someone else who has noticed Prior's woeful keeping over the past couple of years. Commentators rave about him behind the stumps but he misses so many stumpings, and his catching has been awful.

His batting is fine IMO mind so cant complain about that, but I would like to see him get back to basics with his keeping.

Priors never been a great keeper has improved massively.

Always been a shame read and foster couldn't get knocks with the bat as they ten times the keepers that prior is.
