[BBC] Miners' Di Canio protest 'will only end with Sunderland campaign support'

despite the media furore, the labour council disapproval, an MP's utterances, the numerous sports personalities interviews and radio programmes dedicated to the nonsense, these silly little Stalins will think that it is only their stance that has brought Paolo's denial.
Seriously tell them to fuck off and get a shipbuilders flag in there. Haway the Flags can knock one up

Don't even know why Di Canio had to issue a statement of denial. Any half intelligent person knows that the quotes have been taking out of context to suit an agenda.

This. This group is going on as though they speak on behalf of the fans. They don't. They are a bunch of parasites leeching the media attention to suit their own extreme agenda.

What exactly have they given back to the North East/Sunderland in particular?

Should be shut down, they have no workers to represent. They are a once a year organisation set up to organise a now totally depleted Durham Miners Gala. Creaming off funds for doing dick all

They are simply trying to extend their day in the sun.
Who the feck cares what they think ?
Certainly not me.

Agreed. The sooner, the better. These people are not Sunderland supporters, they are political activists first and foremost.

spot on .. cant believe what im reading here...

Dave Hopper, the general secretary of the DMA, told the BBC: "We're looking to the club to be a catalyst in the fight against fascism.

"We live in dangerous times and there is a problem with the far-right in the area.

"We're seeking support from the club. If they assist us with the campaign then the banner will stay in the stadium."

The club do plenty of good work with the foundation and the kick it out campaign

they should respectfully send the banner back and tell them football clubs 1. do not concede to threats from political groups, 2. do not get involved in politics and maybe they should send the banner to one of the old firm clubs, probably celtic , so that they can spout shite there instead

Well done for altering your signature but not replying to my post. Re-writing history to try to give credibilty to your posts and to suit your argument...

You have your platform but I refuse to read any of the left wing PC garbage your spouting.

Actually I did reply to it, I just didn't quote it - but I do mention my signature change in one of my earlier posts, sorry about the confusion

Can´t say that anyone else but the NE locals seems to "discuss" this Di Canio stuff much.
In other words, it´s a local issue and having been on this forum for more than four years I´m sure we can look forward to years of mudslinging on here.

People still talk about Bruce ffs!

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly do the DMA do and how and how many are in their employment? They do not manufacture goods neither do they sell them, they're not a Home Office department (as far as I'm aware) - so where do they get the money to pay their wages and perpetuate their existance...... or does it come from funds raised via the working man.

With the final closure of the NE pits during the 90's I find it hard to understand how they've kept going for so long.

Most sports personalities are actually supportive of Di Cannio

Well, to be honest I think the point shouldn't be his personal views so much now that he's made a public statement distancing himself from fascism and racism. Truth is we may never know so I'm not about to carry on whether I have those personal doubts or not, unless he says or does something demonstrably racist or fascist in future. Whatever my doubts are where Di Canio is concerned the biggest one for me this weekend is whether he can turn this poor form.

But I also believe that if the anti-fascist sentiment was just more widespread and well known to begin with like it is in a lot of other clubs all of this negative publicity would've likely never happened, the focus could've been on simply on improving the football from the very start instead of all this mess, which sadly, due to the image Di Canio has created in the past, is quite predictable and understandable. Surprised it didn't happen sooner honestly.

Di Canio used to play for Celtic and there's a lot of anti-fascist stuff on the ground up there, Green Brigades, etc etc. Don't think there was much controversy while he was there, was there? Of course they have their own controversy there too with their IRA chants and such. But you don't need sectarianism to be anti-fascist. And about the example of St. Pauli I gave you don't need to be an anarchist or a communist either. FC United of Manchester's got a pretty anti-fascist reputation coming from its roots as a protest club maybe that's a better example?

It's win-win, if you ask me. The club does something to spread the message by signing onto whatever, and in return the reputation of the club and its supporters for not tolerating fascism, racism, etc is enhanced. This has already happened with supporting efforts like Show Racism the Red Card, so what's the big deal?

It's not even a particularly 'left-wing' thing like people want to characterise it as. Of course the most active anti-fascist organisers tend to be on the left, no question. But that's because it tends to draw in activist types in general. I don't think you could call Winston Churchill a left-winger though and he certainly did his bit to smash fascism. Whether you're a Marxist or a Labour supporter or a Lib Dem or a Conservative or whatever I think it just makes sense to take a public stand against fascism, like racism wherever it pops up. Again it seems win-win to me. Signing on to something like this would shut everyone up and we could go back to talking about something more enjoyable like the usual substandard football.

the club do a lot of great work in the community, and get behind the kick it out campaigns etc

id like to see the club stay well out of any political arena and tell the Durham Miners to politely shove their banner up their arse. and this is from someone who has marched behind these banners in the past.

im sick to the back teeth of these left wing thought police thinking they can dictate everyones thoughts and beliefs, well not everyone, just normal people trying to get on with their lives.

Little men trying desperately to prolong their time in the spotlight.

This ludicrous statement doesn't even require a response from the club.

Who the fuck do these ancient old fossils think they are, trying to lay down the law to the club? They represent nobody, they are an old outdated group of hasbeen gobshites, desperate for publicity and making complete bellends out of themselves. I hope they do try and hand leaflets out, I'd make the fucker eat it.

The club need to get that banner, have all the staff and players shit in the middle of it, roll it up, take it down to the DMA's cabbage stinking lodge, set it on fire, ring the bell, and fuck off.
