Bairstow, Ali, Burns

Shouldn't be in the team for the 1st ashes match (unless Ali bats at 8 or lower), but all 3 will play.
Bairstow has a technical flaw since focusing on his 1 day cricket (been brilliant in that format)
Burns just doesn't look setup for test cricket
Ali is not a good top 7 batter at this time.

Unconvinced on denly, root batting too low, wood injured, Anderson injured, woakes struggling with his knee, foakes injured.

Team is a shambles at the moment.

Still rather take this now in return for being world cup champions 2019 :)

Burns is not a test cricketer. Fuck knows who we turn to next. Bairstow and Ali will play but they need to turn their insipid form around.

Easy to say who shouldn't play, more difficult to say who should......

Yep, people seem to be lining up to say, this person is not test class, this person can’t bat in top 5 etc etc.

But suggestions of who is better than them certain people and who is going to replace them seems in short supply.

You can only pick your 11 best available and by and large England will do that.

Was just catching up on the highlights from the Ireland game and Bairstow's batting was an absolute technical mess. He always had an unorthodox stance but he seems to have taken a guard outside off stump and opened his stance so far he's aiming at midwicket. This shows a bloke with no confidence in his FC game, he needs dropping.

Are any of them the best players on form for their respective roles?

Buttler plays wicket keeper batsman. Potentially Foakes as specialist wk if fit.
Leach plays first choice spinner, with Bess as back up
Sibley is the form opener, although realistically we need two new openers.

Doesn't require an extraordinary amount of brain wracking.

It's a mess, but since the ECB shove red ball cricket so far out of the way it's not a surprise. I'd be on the phone to Cook saying there's a shit stack waiting for you in the Edgbaston changing rooms.

It does though. The step up to international cricket is astronomical. When Lyth, Stoneman, Jennings, Robson, Burns etc were picked for England their records were way better than Sibkey over time. Picking a lad who a few months ago was barely deemed good enough for CC as an Ashes pick just because of a few good games isn’t the way forward. The difference is monumental

Well you the first one who has mentioned replacements more or less most have just said current ones not good enough.

Me personally I would change it altogether with Root opening and bringing Ballance in and having him and Roy in the middle order.

There is really a lack of competition for places imo, throwing new players into the team is not working, especially new players into the top 3.

The time has come to do something diffrent and senior players to take more responsibility rather than just throwing new players in the top 3 that is simply not working.

Bairstow should definitely play imo, because the other players are not as good as him who could possibly replace him,

Would play him as just a batsman with Buttler keeper.

While I wouldn’t necessarily go with your batting order I do agree with your wider points. Against Australia I don’t think we will score huge runs but our best bet for me would be:
Vince (maybe Burns another chance)
Roy
Root
Ballance
Buttler
Stokes
Bairstow
Then the rest

There’s no perfect answer and all top order choices are open to ridicule but that’s what I would go with. I’ve went full circle on Roy from a year ago but I have no confidence in any opener doing well against their bowling on tricky pitches but at least he has the mental strength to have a chance

He'll be in at 9 I reckon.

People are furious with him because his batting has deteriorated. See the ridiculous "jog on" comment earlier.

He's not in the team for his batting. He's in the team because he's the best spin bowler we have. Not sure why people aren't getting that. Do they tell Stuart Broad to "jog on" when he has a big swipe and a miss? No.

His batting is a bonus.

I agree. Criticism of his batting is fair enough but first and foremost he’s in as our best spinner

I just think Roy has a lot of talent and batting in the middle order would suit him better in test cricket.

He is obviously a very confident lad but it’s too risky and unfair on him asking him to open in the Ashes when does not open for his county.

I would go
Burns
Root
Bairstow
Ballance
Roy
Stokes
Buttler wk

It’s different buts let’s face it something needs to change.

This. A real dearth in batting options at the moment - I remember than golden period in the 2000s when almost every new batsmen scored a century on debut or soon after.... (Strauss, Cook, Prior, Pietersen, Root) whereas now so many of them look out of their depth immediately and it doesn't seem to get any better (Jennings, Burns, Stoneman......)

God help us if back foot Ballance is the answer to our prayers....

And there in lies the problem mate, he is not the answer to anything but is in the top 6 batsman in the country imo, but not good enough for test level, but better option than others like Denly and Vince imo.
