There’s no excuse for not bowling the overs, it’s simply laziness and tardiness on the part (mainly) of the umpires because they allow all the ridiculous time-wasting to occur. Their job is to manage the time and to keep the game moving, but they allow the most ridiculous and unnecessary stoppages to occur all the time - impromptu drinks breaks being the worst offence.

As I’ve said before, start issuing proper penalties for any overs not bowled and sides would sharp make sure they achieve it.

The oddity of Test Cricket is that the final day MUST have 90 overs bowled - they play until they achieve it, so why can’t they bring that rule in for each of the four days prior?

Dropping the number will simply mean they fail to achieve that too. It used to be 104 overs a day in FC cricket, now it’s 96, it used to be 100 a day in Tests, now it’s 90. I fail to see any legitimate reason as to why it’s shorter now.


Needs to be harsher than that in my view, start banning players and taking away match fees.

England actually had two on-field warnings for time wasting on the fourth day at Headingley, which is unheard of even for them. The next one would’ve been a five run penalty and there may still be some ICC action against the skipper. It is getting beyond a joke.

Actually I am repeating what TMS reported but as soon as I wrote it I had my doubts as a Law 41.9 offence provides for only a single formal warning. Unless ICC playing conditions vary that or the onfield umps just got it wrong.

They used to always insist on play not finishing for Test matches until all 90 overs were bowled (adjusted for interruptions).

It led to some very late finishes though and the main reason they had to scrap it was (IIRC) that the venues (in England anyway) complained they were having to pay all the staff extra hours…. I’m not sure why we start test matches at 11 am in England – they really should look at starting at 10:30 from now on I think. It’s really only tradition that keeps the 11am start, isn’t it? I bet some of the MCC wankers would get a bit upset if they had to have their din dins at 12:30 instead of instead of 1 pm on the dot!

Or even 10am. Elsewhere do. I have no problem in them starting 1 hour earlier. If they bowl their allotment, then they can go home on time!
