As predicted....

Bit weird complaining about players being overused, then complaining they're being rested.

Managing the fitness of 35 and 39 year old quick bowlers makes sense too.

I'd rather they were prioritised for England games and their fitness managed by being rested for County games, Durham included.

I get where you're coming from but he stated he wanted to play county Durham hence he didn't go to the IPL. Would the ECB have stopped him playing in the IPL?

I doubt it. Not sure if there would be financial implications but the workloads are different.
They could play a maximum of 17 games in the IPL. For bowlers that's a max of 68 overs in two months, roughly equivalent to two county games?

No idea about batting.

Was it just to play for Durham or was another big factir his mental well being and not being in another bubble at the IPL.
I'm sure Stokes wants to play for Durham and enjoys being back in the Durham environment but not necessarily in the first week in April when the test series doesn't begin till is it June.

One poster on here spent the whole Caribbean complaining stokes was being over played, and just complains 2 weeks later that he isn’t playing for Durham!

Can’t have it both ways

He will play for Durham mate

But not every game.

Its not an argument, its just complete common sense that he doesnt play.

Amazed anyone disagrees with that.

I don’t necessarily disagree with him resting up this week, the bigger picture however comes as no surprise to those who know what FTECB really think about county cricket.

The thing is, you can.

It’s possible for that poster to have been right in both cases. I’m sure Durham would take Stokes as a batsman only for the first game and then have him on a ‘pitch count*’ for any game he does bowl.

*MLB starts this week too y’see ;)
He will have to play some cricket and that has to be for Durham. At the momt I wouldn't be surprised if he is on holiday in the sun somewhere.

If he’s owt like me he’ll be sick of the sun by now

Durham would love him

That’s irrelevant

England pay his wages

He will play plenty of county cricket like but there’s no need to be moaning about him resting up a few weeks

He needs it

Root needs it even more, he played 17 tests last year and like 5 already this year

These blokes are getting flogged into the ground.

It will be the wife who has been stuck in Durham all winter saying "righ tginga get a holiday in the sun booked up"

No CC cricket is defs a problem for some players and Been a huge huge issue in previous years

Stokes n co have come straight from the IPL to a test match with no red ball cricket

Someone like Buttler would have benefited so much from 3 or 4 rounds of CC cricket on good pitches

So many theories on englands problems but it’s not rocket science

Buttler is easily in the best batsman in the country, I’m not arsed what the stats say. But he never plays red ball cricket. For that reason he will never average more than 31/32 or whatever in test cricket

This year bairstow is a big issue, he looks the part now but as he’s not on a red ball contact which is worth loads more, he rightfully it’s going to IPL. However he will go straight in the NZ series with no red ball stuff

Going forward players on red ball deals, the big money, should be required to play 3 county games before the first test match of the summer

Simple

There is no doubt imo Stokes should get some CC games as practice for forthcoming test series but should be possibly 2 or 3 games if that.

Stokes did say wanted that practice so fair dos.

But surely in this modern cricket world nobody thought he would play this first one, so soon after the West Indies series.

As has so often been said on this board he needs to be managed!!

The very poster who has complained he has been over used multiple times has now started a thread complaining him not playing!!

As one famous sportsman used to say

‘You cannot be serious’!!

I'd be tempted to just give him the 3 home games. It's spread out a bit better and he's probably sick of travelling and being stuck in hotels.

Yeah it’s getting the correct balance between giving him match practice to prepare him properly, but looking after him at the same time, as a successful England side badly needs him for both his talent and giving the correct balance to the side.

It not as simple as it seems to get that balance right and sometimes the England set up is damned it they do and damned if they don’t!

One thing is for sure all concerned want a fit and fighting Stokes playing for England
