The ability to have a laugh at ourselves is what separates us from the mags. It is why this board is so much fun even when the results are not, if you sort of know what I mean. We have learned to somehow enjoy the ride even if at times half the f***ing wheels are missing.
We support us, we expect very little so anything else is a bonus. I love my team but I can take whatever they chuck at me with a smile or a here we go again. The polar opposite of our rivals up the road

Agreed. We can take the piss out of ourselves and just laugh stuff off, those fuckers get defensive and cry on if you take the piss out of them.

as a Gateshead lad and a follower of Safc since 1971 i have to say Sunderland fans are a different breed , the people of Sunderland have a far more warmer friendly substance about them than our fickle cousins
There was an arsenal fan in the Harbour when we played them recently who said she was in her first year at Newcastle Uni and hadnt been to Sunderland before. She agreed with my description of Sunderland as Newcastle without attitude.

hmmm , maybe

To be fair there is more than one opposition fan said this. If I remember before we played Arsenal a couple of weeks ago, the Arsenal fan who wrote a blog thingy, whatever it was said, Sunderland fans were everything SKy had being trying to say Newcsstle fans were for years, but weren't
On the train back home was talking to some arsenal fans in the buffet cart having a few beers and they couldn't stand the mags. Thought they were a thoroughly classless bunch.

Most agree, I've told this story before but I'll tell it again. Me and me mate walked into a pub before the 2-4 Chelsea game. As soon as we walked in we realised we'd wandered into away territory, it was like one of them films when the bar went quiet as soon as we walked in. Anyway we though we are here now we will see it out. I went to the bar and this bloke said sing a song, me and me mate looked at each other and thought let's go for it. We burst into a round of Shearer is a wanker, the Chelsea lot bought our beers

  • By 1998 Sunderland had won 1 domestic trophy in 60 years. They had suffered third division football, 3 trips to Wembley in which they failed to score a solitary goal, and had not been in the top half of the top flight for 40 years. The Club had been relegated 7 times in that period. A whole generation had grown up on a diet of, at best, mediocrity. In terms of what should be parallel clubs e.g. Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool the transfer outlay was insignificant, a lack of "stars" evident.
Playing Reading on a Tuesday night in February they attracted over 40,000 to what was a Nationwide "second division game". Can someone please tell me what other Club in British, perhaps world football, could emulate that feat, having endured so much?

The words "I'm thinking hard" and "none" spring to mind.

Whoever wrote that deserves a medal. ;)

Don't remember that trophy being presented like. Did I miss it??

Oh and 9000 at old Trafford - highest away following for the capital one cup.
No free buses either.

There's not many do mate. When I was working down Birmingham I worked with lads who supported clubs all over. No one had a good word to say about them.I think one Villa lad hates them more than any of us,he used to go into proper rants about them.

Well, ive taken people who follow football but not really support a club to the SOL and been blown away by our support, thing is we need to keep supporting when its most needed, i think our season could go either way, beat leicester and we could be looking at the top half.....keep the faith

Walked into a pub in China a few years back with a mag mate of mine, we work together.
We were wanting to watch football, so talking to the barman who liked to watch the premier.
My mate typical deluded mag, asks the barman who is the best centre forward in the premier, he said watch this bet he says Sherah, the barman straight out said Kevin Phillips Sunderland.
f***ing priceless man.
