Closing out doesn't half take a long time... getting the crew escape system triggered is a fiddly task.

Why do the Americans have the astronauts look like they're coming out for an MMA bout in the promo videos?

They popped mirrors on the moon that can be used by those with lasers to measure how far away it is or something. They are used.

It might be remarkable, but the evidence is there that they did it.
