Arsenal & The Title

Right at the start with this and also showing in the preview.

"But nine points clear after 32 games played and still failing to win the league? No team in Premier League history has capitulated to that extent."

Yet the reality is that after 28 games each, Arsenal had 61 points and Man City had 59 so it was just 2 points with equal amount of games played. It's only the next 2 games that Man City drew and Arsenal won that after 30 games each the true gap was still only 6 points with Arsenal on 67 and Man City on 61. The most it's ever been is 7 points after 14 & 22 games.

Until just recently some had it down as Arsenal's title for a while, even though they've still had to go to Man City which would close the gap by 3 points if it was the next game. I said at the start of February I still fancied Man City and the point of my post is that the 'gap' isn't as big as the media etc is making out as it's never realistically been 9 points. It's been mainly been 6 points at most, getting as close as 2 and it's there since around the 10th game as Arsenal had a great start getting 25 points to Man City's 19.

Arsenal have played 13 games so far this year, W7 D4 L2 getting 22 points and Man City W5 D6 L1 with 21 points so even if Man City win tomorrow, Man City have made all of 2 points back on Arsenal in a 3rd of a season's worth of games.

Love this, very high quality post, more posts like this on the SMB from all involved surely, we can manage better

I've got friends at work who are Arsenal fans who are shitting their pants. However, the arrogance walking back to Kings Cross from their fans after we played at their place made me want them to f**k it up. How's that quadruple looking now 🤷‍♂️
Agree - a load of arrogant fuckers at their place in Feb.

City aren't the powerhouse they were either and could drop points. but mentality Pep is much better then Arteta when the pressure is on.

Beat Chelsea and they'll be flying when Arsenal arrive ..

Thought Arsenal would win it at a canter but yesterday’s result is huge as long as City win today, which isn’t a given either.

Very good article, this:-
Could they really blow it from here? 🤔😱
Course they can Man City have 8 left to play one of their games on hand being Burnley and have to play arsenal at home which anyone that has watched both the last month will tell ya there’s only one winner there. Arsenal will probley draw with the mags or something where do Man City slip up?

Yes but it’s about current form and arsenal have lost a big cup final to their main rival, if city win today then they are favourites

Agreed. If his touchline antics are anything to go by, he doesn’t seem all that calm and collected.
Aye.
His touchline shouting and pointing tells the world he doesn’t think his players know what to do in just about every given situation. If I owned Arsenal I’d want to know why we’ve signed these players who don’t know how to play the game and if they’re not his choices why he hasn’t came to me and told me that the club are giving him players who can’t play.

I reckon Arsenal will get over the line but they are going to crawl over it.

City will beat them next week but then fuck it up at Everton.

I think everyone wad love the City of old to win stuff but not this new cheating financially doped Frankenstein City. However much Arteta gets on my tits I’ve got to prefer Arsenal winning it I’m afraid. Though it’d be hilarious to see both North London clubs fans attempts to console themselves with the others woes if Arsenal blow it and Spurs go dahn on the same weekend.
North London for never indeed.

My Arsenal supporting mate bet on them not to win a trophy this season a good month or two back. I haven’t watched them much but he says they have been truly awful and will throw it. I think it all hinges on the game between them and City showed in the Cup that they are in better form currently

Nowt against Arsenal except thinking they have a very high % of whoppers in their fanbase, but it would be pretty hilarious if they do bottle it again after the position they’ve been in. After yesterday I honestly think they will as well.

It's not particularly Arsenal's title to "bottle". If City win every game from here, they'll probably be champions. Arsenal could win 5 of their last 6 and still finish 2nd.

This is an Arsenal team who have averaged 2.18 points per game this season. They're much better than everyone gives them credit for and there's a good chance that they lose it. That's how competitive it is at the top.

I think it's a bit ridiculous that we try and reduce teams/people down to just one thing. Arsenal will be declared either "boring set piece merchants" or "bottlers" by most of the public but that's far too simplistic.

Favourites if they win today? They won't be at the bookies so if you're a betting man then there will be some good odds to be had on Man City. Though I'm not saying City can't win it, far from it as I said on Feb 1st I fancy them to win it. That was based on the fact the gap wasn't huge and City had the game in hand. Yet people had written City off and some saying it's Arsenal's title to lose after Man City drew at Spurs. Yet Man City then won the next 4 but again had a blip and if anything, they've drawn the last 2 in the league.

Based on just current league form (given starting teams are different between competition), Arsenal aren't that much different from Man City and the points gap isn't 9 points. This 'collapse' and bottling it isn't what the media, such as this article (or some believe) are making out and it's more for clicks/views etc.

Arsenal had won 4 in a row in the league before Bournemouth yesterday who were quite decent (possibly one of their best performances). That's the story of the league this season, sometimes teams turn up. Though not the league, the same for Southampton as they were brilliant the FA cup.

If Man City were the ones with 1 game in hand prior to yesterday (and had won a game) then it would be a non event. But this 'lazy' the titles ower for Man City or Arsenal have bottled it is the same as when people make opinions in games, only for it to flip. If people were that sure, rather than making throwaway remarks then they would probably lose money at the bookies over time.

This! This season below from Arsenal isn't bottling the league at all, yet Man City have been right on their tail waiting for the odd defeat, unlike when the mags were massively ahead on 12 points.

Even on the day, the Wolves team that turned up were decent in their mini form revival spell and it was a 94th minute equaliser. If Man City win today then aye it's a massive game next week, but if Chelsea turn up and beat Man City I still won't write either team off. It's still too close to call and has been for most of the season and has never been either teams title.

Arsenal's last four games are Fulham (H), West Ham (A), Burnley (H) and Palace (A). Got to be beating Fulham and Burnley at home. West Ham will be tricky due to relegation fight. Palace likely on the beach in the last game so comes down to how much Arsenal need points there. If Arsenal can't get at least 9 points out of those games they deserve to lose the title race.
