Anyone not wanting Europe?

When we came up, I thought it'd be a grim scrap season after season to avoid relegation and aspiring to be a mid-table club.
No reasonable chance of a title win, so that leaves the domestic cups and nicking a place in Europe.

If we're not going to try to win something, that leaves mid table mediocrity indefinitely.
There's always people on here happy when we crash out of the cups, so it's no surprise there's people who want to avoid getting into Europe.

You don't pick and choose when you qualify for Europe. The likes of Man City and Arsenal might, but the likes of us should be ecstatic and grab the chsnce with both hands. We might never get to see us qualify for Europe in our lifetimes, why in the world would you not want to qualify?

If we get into Europe, I've no doubt the club will deepen the squad, and it shouldn't be too hard to attract talented young players who would give a kidney to play in a European competition. If we struggle in the league next season because of Europe, then tough shit - all the 'outliers' who qualify have the same challenges.
I for one will take that chance. I hope we beat Chelsea and qualify for Europe, I can't get my head around the idea that we should avoid qualifying because of current lack of squad depth. Pairs of balls need to be grown.

Only KLD can truly know about this type of thing. There is no doubt that European involvement stretches a squad. It's tiring with travel and extra games means extra injury concerns. It will mean he has to strengthen. We'll find out soon enough but of course we all want it. Is it too early though? Hopefully not but that's up to the ownership group.

Its daft not to want it, but I could see it creating problems as under the new rules it would reduce the amount we have available to spend next season from 85% of our footall income to 70% of our income at the same time as needing to strengthen our squad and play a lot more matches, all with one of the lower incomes in the Premier League.

Obviously our income would increase if we were in Europe and that would offset some of it, but the prize money in the Conference League is "tiny" and the extra matches would take their toll on us.
I originally thought that but what if we're not at 70% now and didn't plan to be given the long term aim? I had a bit of a waffle in post #323 but it's all speculation as we don't know what our current revenue or spend is.

If the club's aim longer term is to be in Europe occasionally then would we be better suited working within the 70% range like other clubs are. If we don't get Europe this season and push it to 85% then it will take some doing then cutting back if we get into Europe in a later season.

I think the club want to go for Europe as the boost it would give the whole club may not be financial but it will still be something good. We get into Europe then the club look at investing within reason so it doesn't take a toll on us. Look how we brought in the players last season. We could sell 1 or 2 and reinvest that money also.

I dunno really as I'm not KLD, I'm just waffling again but I hope we get into Europe. If we don't it could all turn to shite next season anyway and we don't get a sniff of Europe for another 25 years.

:insert Davey's clip saying "Let's get carried away man" here:

Can't believe I'm asking this but there's a few lads in work this morning saying we shouldn't be looking to win on Sunday as if we qualify for europe it all but guarentees relegation next year...

Just wondering if anyone shares the same opinion? For me it's a no brainer, opportunities like this don't come around often and we should be snapping the hands off it.
Well tbf playing in Europe every Thursday has relegated Wolves, Burnley and West Ham this year so they have a point

I was a bit scared about the thought for a while, because of the usual shit what comes with qualifying for Europe.

But the closer we get, how can you not want it? You want us to beat Chelsea because its another 3 points, its what football is all about.

Does it make it harder for us next season? My guess is yes. But I think the same lot saying it will "relegate us" are the same who complain about every f***ing thing, the Mary Whitehouses' of Sunderland, Mary Shitehouses if you will.

They also probably said we had no chance of promotion, beating Cov, beating Sheff U, signing Le Fee, Xhaka, staying up nevermind finishing top half...

So give me Europe now. I want it raw.

(Now I want it, it won't happen...easy this pessimism lark)

Moyes was desperate for Europe, he said a few targets didn’t want to sign due to lack of it with Everton.
Not really boshed tbh.
Let’s make our mark in the premiership first. 😊
Given its majority of the top half qualify for Europe these days, the alternative is mid table and looking over your shoulder or relegation battle.

I've decided I'd love it. At first I was a bit hesitant because of what seems to have happened to Forest and the Mags but actually Forest were crap earlier this season due to managerial screw ups and the Mags recruited horribly in the summer.

I have no problems with resting the squad for early stages of whatever competition we are in (in some ways it'll be helpful to get game time to squad players who will benefit from minutes) but the main thing is just the statement it makes about how far we've come so quickly and finally acheiving something we haven't managed in so long. If we don't do it mind it's still been an amazing year but can we just get one more big result..?

Just wait til the season ends then whatever happens say that's what you wanted.

The stricter spending rules for those in Europe is a bit of a pisser but aye, just go for it and what will be will be.

We've done the latter this season  And some will argue Europe gives you a bigger pull, attracting better players, enabling you to make a bigger mark.

You take things when they come along as you never know when the chance will come along again. There was many saying it was too early for us to go up last season and look where we are.

Heart says yes.

Head says we don’t remotely have the squad depth and it’d be an absolute killer for us in the league, as it has been for numerous teams over the past few seasons who’ve ended up in relegation battles.
You need to have faith in our owners. Kyril said months ago that our aim was top ten and recruitment would be based on achieving that goal.Funding has already been agreed at Board level . Our planning is crucial to the club's aspirations.

Same as we weren’t gonna get out of league 1

Weren’t gonna get out the championship. Wouldn’t beat cov and Sheffield utd and would finish bottom this season

See if we beat Chelsea first and see what happens

Keep the faith 🔴⚪
Pressure on Chelsea on Sunday

Of course I want it. Do I worry about how it could have an effect on our league form? Absolutely but if you don't want to play in Europe then what's the point in doing well in the Premier League? I also got won't be upset if we don't t get it. Whatever happens at the weekend it's been a tremendous season.

I’ll be relaxed Sunday. Whatever happens it’s been a brilliant season, especially if we finish above the mags. European qualification would just be unreal.

That said, I would much prefer Europa over the Conference League for reasons mentioned thought the thread. Will of course still absolutely take it if that’s what it is.

Hope the recruitment team are ready and we are in a good spot financially to balance it all without losing key players (yet).

Getting in the conference is definitely more winnable than the europa but i’d take either personally if we can do it.

We need a fairly hefty chunk of investment to stay still let alone progress. The stats tell us 85% chance of being relegated 1st season, 65% 2nd season. Plenty to suggest we need another good summer not as many but 1st team quality.
Europe would mean even heavier investment but could just take the money and jiggle.
Europe would make it a lot easier to recruit better players and thats the only reason I would want it now.

When was the last time a team playing in Europe got relegated. Genuinely can't remember any.

From this country obviously

Is the "juice worth the squeeze"? For a handful of games in the backend of nowhere, to take part in a minor competition, we could be watching a team struggle all season and we know that won't go down well at the SoL.

I'm in the, if it happens (European qualification) then fair enough, but it could be a long hard frustrating season ahead.

I know this is just a tad off topic, but just think, if the mags had got their six easy points off us, they'd be where Bournemouth are now and challenging for a Champions league place. So we have fettled them, good and proper.
Also shows how competitive the division has been this season. Aside from Burnley and Wolves, at the bottom, and Arsenal & City it has been difficult to call most weeks.

I would hazard a guess 20+ years. Nobody springs to mind.
