Anyone not wanting Europe?

I’ve been chatting about this with a friend — it’s a good debate.
Europe would boost the club’s reputation, but it could stretch our squad too much and risk a relegation battle with all the extra games. Plenty for the club to think about.

This attitude can go on forever though. If we win the league it would mean qualifying for the champions league and maybe the players aren't good enough.

Every step when you are making progress just means that players have to adapt and / or we bring in more / better ones...

We might as well have conceded the play off game against Sheff Utd going by some of our fan's outlooks...

Ipswich played in Uefa Cup 2001/2002 and went down. Since then nobody has been relegated.

Few teams drop off a little. The Mags have used it as a bedrock of their excuses for not performing this season.

Palace are gonna finish where they finish nearly every year, lower mid-table. Forest have flirted with relegation - but they were already doing that before European football started this season, they hardly seem correlated.

On the flip side, Aston Villa got to the final of the Europa and are gonna finish 4th/5th. Arsenal got further than they ever have in CL and are probably gonna win the league.

It can have an impact but worth it.
Arsenal have reached a CL final before mind

What's the crack with financial fair play? I know it's been highlighted that the Mags will be in a better position re spending position if they don't qualify.
If you’re not in Europe, Premier League rules say you can spend 85% of projected revenue next season on first team squad costs (wages, transfer fees etc). In UEFA comps, you can only spend 70%

Yeah knew that so wondered if that wouldn't impact us as much as the Mags. Or if we'd be in a pickle too (can differ as not everyone is in same position, run the same etc).

Some of the teams in the conference league next season include Rennes, Besiktas, Freiburg, Atalanta, Panthaniakos, Braga and potentially, Ajax plus the 7th side in Spain (could be Valencia).

It’s not all minnows.

EVERY PL side is only allowed a 25 man squad.
What do you mean "bigger squad" ?

Players like Rigg are just additional youth players for the top teams...

We can still sign a lot more players and improve our squad. We also have a lot of deadwood that needs to be replaced with players capable of impacting a game.

There is a trend that clubs can struggle when first playing in Europe in comparison to their previous years performance but there' was also a trend that newly promoted teams go straight back down but some very smart recruitment and pragmatic game management helped us overcome it. Not saying we'll be challenging top 6 while winning a European trophy but we'd be daft to be scared of progression.

We had the same debate from some saying they didn't want to get promoted because we'll lose 30 games.

The Conference League would be perfect for us.

The standard isn't fantastic so it would allow us to play a second string team and still have a chance of competing.

I also trust our recruitment to do what is needed in the summer if we do end up in Europe and playing extra games. The plan will have been in place long before now for that outcome.

I think they would walk the league with only league fixtures to focus on. Newcastle have a load of issues with Howe and players underperforming. Plus when the below par performances start it can be tough to get out of.

It's almost certain that they would have finished higher in the league without being in any European comps though (Mags).
Agree the Mags would have done better than they have without Europe, although to me that is at least partly to do with bad squad management and making players run themselves knackered in the first half.

With Man City though I’m not sure. Like I said, other teams around them also play in Europe, and Man City have the deepest squad, so surely no Europe would help the weaker squads more than City?

The prize money says otherwise, the money for Europa and Confrence league are very similar.

If you win the final, the Conference league pays approx 1 million euros more than the Europa to make it as an incentive to win it. (Granted the league values are slightly less)

I don't know the exact figures, but iirc winning the Conference League is worth about €10m I think - you'd have to spend more than that in the transfer market to pad the squad.

Can't believe I'm asking this but there's a few lads in work this morning saying we shouldn't be looking to win on Sunday as if we qualify for europe it all but guarentees relegation next year...

Just wondering if anyone shares the same opinion? For me it's a no brainer, opportunities like this don't come around often and we should be snapping the hands off it.
The reason those lads are sitting at your work dwelling in mediocrity and talking shite all day and our players are earning thousands a week playing premier league football is the same reasons why our lads will be busting a gut for europe come sunday

Sorry meant that if the other clubs were in Europe (Liverpool , Arsenal, Man Utd.) and Man City only focused on the league with no Europe.

Man City's squad focused on 38 games only would walk the league I meant.
