Anthony Patterson

If he wanted more games, he could have maybe not gone on like a bit of a bellend in the shoot-out.

Lad has an excellent record at penalties generally, so can’t help feeling he psyched only himself out.
H'way man, why call him a bellend just because he didn't save any pens in a pen shootout.

How did you feel about him when he was man of the match in the play off final a few months ago?

He has played almost 170 senior games here, had an uncontested shirt for 3 full seasons, and arguably hasn't improved whatsoever in that time.

He was superb in the final and I think that gives us a bit of recency bias and red and white tinted glasses in that respect, but I'd have been hoping we'd have looked to replace him this summer in the Championship, never mind the PL!

Statistically, he has been a middle of the road Championship goalkeeper for the last 3 seasons and is a fair assessment of where he's currently at.
If anything, he arguably went backwards.

Roefs is next level.

Some of his distribution yesterday got us straight on the front foot. Patterson isn’t capable of that

He also refused to leave his line for crosses which Roefs seems very good at. We’d be under a lot more pressure with Patterson In Goal
Not just that but the command of the box. Look at how many times Roefs on fire was yelling at defenders and coming out of his line to grab balls rather than let them go stray

It’s absolutely night and day let’s be honest.

Patto will always be loved for that save in the final, but well done the club for not letting sentiment get in the way here.

No room for sentiment im afraid. We need to stay in the PL and if Roefs gives us a better chance of that than Patto then its shit for Patto but its is what it is.
On a slight tangent the next time a player leaves us and we talk about club loyalty remember how we what we've done to Patto, Neil, Roberts, Rigg etc. Loyalty works both ways

The one player i feel abit sorry for. Roefs is clearly an upgrade and there’s no doubt we needed to improve in that area but just think it leaves Patterson in a tough spot. He’s been numher 1 for the last 3/4 seasons and now with the position he plays and fact we out the cup he might not kick a first team ball till the fa cup in January. He would be number for the majority of the championship and teams aboad. It’s different for Neil Roberts Rigg etc as they outfield players and are 1/2 injuries away from starting and have opportunities to also come off the bench. We obviously need a good number of 2 so it’s ideal for the club having a competent goalie pushing Roefs and always have that security blanket if a injury occurred but it must be abit shite for Patterson

Fair points made mate.
I certainly wouldn't say i feel sorry for him. On Premier league wages sat onthr bench.

But you make a valid point around the cup games.
Patto only has himself to blame. Hes had the goalkeeper jersey to himself for 3/4 seasons and has hardly improved.
He doesn't command his box and his distribution isn't great. The foremost is a basic of any decent keeper.
If he wants to be away. Im sure a few Championship clubs would take him.

Probably came and caught more crosses in 3 games than Patterson did in 3 seasons. ,😀.
Never forget that playoff save though. Magnificent

Problem for keepers is thats there's just the one spot they are fighting for, its not like they can play other positions like other players, so its a case of suck it up and improve to oust roefs or look for new opportunities next season.
Its a cut throat industry so just the way it is

Well, I didn’t call him a bellend, because he didn’t act the bellend.

Can we not criticise players because we like them and they’ve done great things? I’m not saying peddle him. I’m not saying he’s shit. I’m not even saying he played badly.

But if an opposition goalkeeper pranced around the line, trying to psyche out our players and we scored six penalties, I think we’d be all over him. It was a daft and he should learn from it.

There were penalties where, because he was jumping around, he was starting in an odd position. And half of them just went down the middle. If he’d been a little less pre-mediated, he’d have saved some.

Unfortunately no room for sentiment in football as evidenced by the number of players who have been moved from championship starter to either available for transfer or bench warmer

Keeper always the worst position to be in for that reason too.

Don’t feel sorry for him at all
He’s been given improved terms over summer
We have clearly upgraded the position
The guy has fitness issues, his kicking never improved in years
All things he had control of

One thing I have learned very quickly these last few seasons is that you can’t be too sentimental towards a player. We have seen fan favourites in Jack Clarke and Ross Stewart leave the club alongside Jobe and our play off final winner Tommy Watson and all have been very well replaced. From the early performances of Roefs it wold very much appear we have kept that trend going. So to conclude the matter, as much as Patterson has been a great servant for the club it is also clear that the level required at the top is in excess of what his ability is at. It’s a harsh word football but there are levels to it like in any other sport.

Lad has never had any real competition. His kicking is atrocious and it’s never improved. Good shot stopper. Doesn’t command his area (that’s modern keepers in general). Happy we have improved on him but equally happy the lad is still here. It’s decent back up & he’s streets ahead of Moore.

I remember watching Patterson after we got promoted from L1 to Championship and being worried. Made some silly mistakes early into the season, but as the first season back in the Championship progressed, it was clear we had bigger issues in other areas of the pitch and there was improvement needed across the team.

Unfortunately the level of improvement from Patterson has not been consistent. For a young keeper, we should really be seeing enormous strides in his game season to season and last season in particular he had one major error in him every game. Now sometimes we’re cruising 2-0 up and then whoever is playing at the back fixes the situation but numerous times he’s made a cock up that has cost us a goal.

I thought he was decent at penalties and the shot stopping was improving, but as others have said there were areas of his game that were fragile and I was nervous in some situations when he was required to make big saves.

I feel sorry that Patterson is sitting on the bench for us after a MoTM performance at Wembley, but then I think back to those 3 Championship seasons - he was fine, maybe surprisingly good in the first season, one of the better lads in the second season but extremely error prone last season. He’s earning good wages and I reckon could still have a future at the club, he’s only 25 but needs to work hard on himself and fitness. Needs to command his area better. Kicking must improve. Would love to see him stay as second choice, but have a feeling some Championship or Scottish premier league teams might be interested next season, most likely a loan.

For the record - I think we’ll stay up hence why I’m saying next season he will head on a loan. A mistake to leave him leave for anything less than 10m considering how poor Trafford has been thus far for City - just watched the so called experts opinion on Trafford vs Brighton - calling him MoTM and barely did anything meaningful all game. Ridiculous and how much did they pay?

Patterson isn’t quite as good - but seriously £30m for Trafford - Patterson is 20-25m by that metric, he’s not that far behind him. Just watching Sunderland 1-0 Burnley from last season : look how nervous and poor Trafford was.
