Anthony Patterson

In a way the only thing I feel for him is that he hasn't had anyone to push him up until now.
He hasn't progressed as well as we'd hoped and also part of last season his form was awful. He didn't help himself with the weight gain and it was clear we needed an upgrade.
Wondered if he was scrapping for his place things would have been different.
Superb save in the final but I suppose a little too late.
We've upgraded and he has a choice to kick on or to relax. In his court now.

Made some magnificent saves in the play off final but there were periods last season where he was really poor IMO. Made some woeful mistakes (Hull sticks out) that we couldn’t afford to see repeated at this level.

His distribution has always been poor and he has a tendency to be rooted to his goal line.

His performance in the play offs was fantastic but facts are he was statistically a below average Championship shot stopper last season and he has never been able to command his box. We'd have been writing off our season before it had started if we stuck with him. Harsh but the club made the right decision.

Roefs is next level.

Some of his distribution yesterday got us straight on the front foot. Patterson isn’t capable of that

He also refused to leave his line for crosses which Roefs seems very good at. We’d be under a lot more pressure with Patterson In Goal
This

He’s a great shot stopper and was superb at Wembley, but he hasn’t really improved the parts of his game that are far too weak for this level. Not convinced he will. Had to recruit.

Clearly you are utterly wrong , and if indeed you are supposedly an safc fan, you should wash your mouth out
Can you explain how I’m wrong?

I judge on what I see, ie spending the majority of last season around 2 stone overweight, warming up yesterday at half time like a fat lad going to slimming world with his mam. He’s obviously not a grafter and if you didn’t know what he done for a living you’d never guess he was an elite athlete. I’m in far better shape and I’m 40

The potential was always there with Patto. A big lad and a great shot stopper. We’ve being saying for three years that he needs to work on commanding his area and distribution.

They haven’t improved, quite possibly due to complacency due to lack of competition.

This could be the making of him or the end of him at SAFC. It all depends on his attitude to improve from here.

I like Patto but I have a feeling he has a poor attitude. I don't think he's a trouble maker but has a poor attitude towards how he looks after himself. It's holding him back tbh.

He’s a very good goalkeeper in his own right but Roefs is on a different level to Patterson and you can see it right away, his commanding of his area, distribution, calmness on the ball has impressed me no end, I think we’ve signed a absolute gem who will only get better

It’s a good point you make about the cup game. Given those lads that played would’ve been guaranteed to start in cup games, you’d think they’d bust their balls to make sure we go through.
Perversely, if Roefs had been on the bench and had been brought on for the pelanties, Patto would still be playing in the cup.

Part and parcel of football. You either sulk or work harder to get into the 11.
It is Premier League football and I don't think we had room to be sentimental. Club made a decision and after 3 games, the keeper looks an upgrade. It is what it is. Let's see if Patto improves

He done a fuck up then the usual blank stare the other night, I havent missed that.

Doesnt seem to get pissed off at any errors, seems to just shrug which isnt a great look.
Ah it just does not get to him and that’s a good thing. When did you ever see someone like David Seaham kicking off after he made a mistake

There are a number i feel a bit sad that they arnt in the team but SAFC have been totally right so far. We could not aafford to gamble the early points on offer to us away with last seasons side......can you imagine if we had lost all 3 and the momentum it would be having on all aspects of the club?
The likes of Patto, Neil etc have to introduced gradually ideally when the points at stake are possibly inconsequential.
I do think Patto can step up but he has to bide his time, goalies generally improve with age.

Great post!

He has played almost 170 senior games here, had an uncontested shirt for 3 full seasons, and arguably hasn't improved whatsoever in that time.

He was superb in the final and I think that gives us a bit of recency bias and red and white tinted glasses in that respect, but I'd have been hoping we'd have looked to replace him this summer in the Championship, never mind the PL!

Statistically, he has been a middle of the road Championship goalkeeper for the last 3 seasons and is a fair assessment of where he's currently at.
im not disagreeing with anything you have said just think he’s in a tough spot he’s literally not going to kick a ball for 4 months. Different for outfield players but when you have been a number one for 3/4 years it must be shite. Abit like Ramsdale
At Arsenal when they signed Raya
