why do they do it?

Example:

Just seen a video on Twitter where the bloke ended by saying "all the way from Knoxville, Tennessee, USA"

a) Knoxville is fairly well known. You don't need to tell us it's in the US of A.
b) Tennessee is definitely well known. You don't need to tell us it's in the US of A.
c) your American accent gives the game away. You're clearly from... the US of A.

There's Knoxville's in
  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Missouri
  • Maryland
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
Saying he's from the USA is clearly just a case of national pride. 'MURICA.

Likewise, there are plenty of British and probably French places from which places in America take their name - Paris, Texas. Norfolk, Virginia etc.
Although putting USA on the end is a bit pointless to us, the USA is still their country so naturally they stick it on the end

Was he homeless? Because if not that isn't his full address.

It does confuse them when you don't give your full address, done this a few times when I've been over there,

"So, where you from?",

"Washington"

State or DC?

"The original one"
