All they had to do was have the crew go in to hyper sleep.then get awoken by the computer to investigate summick mincing about. Easily solved.

It's an alien. It has an unearthly life cycle which adds to the horror.

It has acidic saliva so might be able to digest the fabric of the ship. It might have raided the ship's food stores. The fact it grows so large so quickly is a holy fuck moment in the film.

Dunno. It’s science fiction. They made a film once when some creature turned from some egg/seed thing into a fat glutinous snakey thing with multiple legs, then back into some kind of egg thing, then emerged as a completely different thing with colourful wings and antenna and that. And another one when some creature started off looking like semolina, the it turned into a blob with a tail that swam around, then gradually grew four legs and grew a head and a mouth and then started hopping around in land. f***ing ridiculous.

I think David Attenborough had something to do with it.
