Alexandre Mendy (transfer rumour)

The only other two I have heard of are Armstrong (not what we need imo, glad we steered clear) and Moore (no thanks for the fee and wages he would want on a three year deal)

Can’t comment on the others.

I think people are downplaying how hard it is to get a good striker.

baffles me when people mention armstrong. we need a striker that scores goals and this lad has scored 3 in over 60 appearances at this level

This is the head coach’s take on it:

I get the impression some people want us to sign anyone, so long as it’s soon and no matter what it costs.

“It’s difficult, a long process”

Not so much for other clubs.

Still, nice to see Le Bris has been quick to learn his lines. Speakman will be pleased.

Aye I saw that. Nick Barnes saying on total sport just now that he thinks RLB wants a striker but gets the impression he’s not convinced they’re going to get him one.

Statements like the above suggest he’s already paving the way to explain why …

The explanation translated for me reads “We’re looking for a decent forward with experience but won’t spend more than a couple of million”

No wonder it’s a long process.

Even that sounds like they are after one specific player who they're waiting for.
On the plus side: RLB should know his style and capabilities well, and will be confident he can adapt to this league.

The downside is obviously if we don’t manage to get him in.

I’d rather sign a player we genuinely want and think suits the team on deadline day than get someone we are less confident about tomorrow.

I’ve been saying since last season they might need to adjust what they’re willing to spend, but obviously that requires balance.

We should absolutely not be spending 8m on Tom Cannon for example.

but that's not the situation is it?

They accepted the offer however when they were taken over the new owners put a hold on all transfers until they talk to the squad, he still wants out, but they still have a delay on the deal.
They must be talking really, really slowly...

I don't think four people would be considered numerous considering there are four other agencies with 3 players and the fact we've got 50+ contracted players on our books.
I’ve no issue with it, I also know how agencies work better than most…

However it is worthy of discussion that all our current French players and manager are from a boutique French agency who happens to have a close relationship with KLD.

Again it’s not a problem “as long” as we don’t narrow or limit ourselves solely to this agency. The fact we’re after Mendy would say we’re not.

Agreed on both counts but I’d say Stansfield at the rumoured £5m - £6m fee is worth the money. All the other forwards mentioned earlier went for less than £4m.

If for whatever reason relations with Caen completely deteriorate to the extent that the Mendy deal falls through I think we’re right up
the creek and it’ll end up with Burstow mark 2

Best case scenario: Mendy through the door asap and an Amad level PL loan on deadline day.

Worst case: Mendy falls through and we’re scrambling about on deadline day trying to get a random PL youngun in.

I wish KLD and Speakman would stop messing about and pay the required fee to get Mendy done.
They might save a bit by hanging on but it's false economy if we miss out on promotion by a couple of points because we didn't have a decent striker for the first 3 games.
The way they have dealt with the striker situation is a disgrace!

He’s probably shite

You mean, unless you’re willing to pay more than you think they’re worth.

The two we’ve been linked with both involved a fee.
Not really, just that they need to re-think the budget if they can't get a decent striker on the budget that they're using. Even if we have to sell someone to pay for it, we can't go into another season without one.
