Deep Purple In Rock

Paranoid
As young uns we just took it for granted, but what an era.

Curtis Mayfield
Todd Rundgren
J Geils Band
joni Mitchell
Pretty Things
MC5
john cale
nico
kevin Ayers
Hawkwind
Traffic
Humble Pie
Delfonics
Randy Newman
The Faces
Johnny Cash
Willie Dixon
The Wailers
Ry Cooder

Funkadelic
Parliament
Spirit
Brinsley Schwarz

Not a bad year at all. The Stones were right in the middle of their golden period but released nowt of note. Very few of the black heavyweights were on form.

Van Morrison for me. Obviously Brown Eyed Girl's a banger, and I do enjoy Them's Gloria, but I can't be chowed with him. Sweet Thing - I like that one - gans on a bit though.

He's gone full whopper anarl now so the miserable awld shite can fuck off.
Aye, got. That makes 17.

Quick look through here and I can add:
The Madcap Laughs - Syd Barrett
Climbing! - Mountain
First Step - Faces
Cricklewood Green - Ten Years After
Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash
Highway - Free

Other than perhaps Sabbath, The Doors and The Who, I wouldn't say any of the others were the best work of any of the artists and quite a few are possibly even substandard (Hendrix for instance).

It's not saying they were the best work though.

And it's all about opinions, for me Band of Gypsys shows Hendrix at his best.

The implication seems to be that it was a vintage year and these are the albums they've picked to illustrate that. I just don't think it's a spectacular list and I own about 15 of them.

Obviously, it's all about opinions, but I think you'd be in a minority thinking Band of Gypsys is Hendrix at his best. It always seemed like a bit of a contract filler to me. It is far too meandering in parts which was probably a reflection of his undecided state of mind about where he wanted to take his music next. There are even better live albums.

What always stands out is the number of bands who released two or more lps in a year. On this list there's Van Morrison, Sabbath and Elton John, Clapton, McCartney, Lennon and Harrison on two (Ringo released two solo lps too), Rod Stewart also on the first Faces lp that year.

His Band And The Street Choir is my favourite Van lp.
