My daughter uses my old Canon 350D and recently it was been coming up with error 99.

Are there any NE camera specialists that will have a look at it, or will it need to be sent away?

Thanks in advance.

looks like a shutter error

dave boyle is bletchley does canon, will quickly tell you if it's a skip job or not . charges £35 per hour on repairs

or just try a replacement lens

if it's the original standard lens they are likely ten a penny on ebay

edit, ignore that about the lens

shutter is on the body

i'm just too used to having my shutters in the lens

dave boyle is camera repair workshop, bletchley. thoroughly good chap

Thanks for that.
note the edit

might be worth just trying to flick the shutter around, some muck stuck in there or needs a bit of oil

It's possibly over 10 years old and never been serviced so I'll have a quick look myself and see if I can see anything obvious.

Thanks again.

I am pretty sure Error 99 on Canon is a non-specific error. Last time I had it, it was a sticky aperture diaphragm on a lens.

Steps to try:
Take the lens off (try with different lenses too) and ensure that the contacts on the camera body and lens are clean
If that doesn't work, "reboot" the camera - take out all of the batteries (including the little coin cell which keeps the settings), switch camera on for a minute. Switch off and replace batteries.

If that doesn't work, give her the 40D which you bought off me for her and nicked for yourself ;)

Thanks for the advice and reminding me I'm such a shit dad.

Since I gave her my 350D, my daughter has really got into photography and has enrolled on a night class and is loving it.She struggles with the technical side a bit but she's very creative and seems to have a natural eye for composition. She's a nursery assistant and because she has a natural affinity with bairns, her shots of children are pretty damn good for a relative novice.

She's in the middle of a project right now and is borrowing the 40D for the weekend.

I was going to use it myself in the Lakes this weekend so perhaps I'm not such a selfish twat after all.

Another question, what would be the next logical step up from the 40D? Used and £500 max w/o lens. Mainly landscapes and urban stuff.

Ta in advance again.

For landscapes/urban, the 6D would probably be the obvious Canon upgrade to do , but I think you would struggle to get one of them for £500 yet.
The 70D is also a more modern sensor so might be worth a look at and might fall in budget.

The 6D has a larger sensor, and also better low-light capability, but another thing to watch is you could not use any EF-S lenses you have with this, only EF ones.

yer but its a decent FF sensor under £500. Still pretty rare. You're looking at about £650-700 for a decent nick one

The bumps and scratches make me wonder how well it's been cared for, but biggest concern would be shutter cound - over 200K when they are rated at up to 100K

Do I need a FF sensor?

No, you don't need one, just the image quality is generally higher with one.

Thanks for the input lads.

I'm now considering a 70D.

not at all, but they have more colour depth and dynamic range, both useful for landscape.Worth noting if you have EF-S lenses for your current camera they may not be 100% compatible with a FF (edit - just noticed Rog covered this)

The shutter count is the only thing that would put me off, the 5D's are built like tanks and a bit cosmetic damage wouldn't put me off a bargain.

cracking landscape camera if you can stretch:

you'd need a metabones adaptor for your canon lenses too

Yeah, mine's on 240k actuations and still going strong, for now...looks damn sight tidier than that one mind!
