Adam Johnson Trial Verdict

I think that there are a number of questions regarding the police's conduct that need answering.

The statement to the BBC made me sit up, yet apart from you, no one seems to have mentioned it.

The female detective seemed to be second guessing the victim's feelings towards SAFC's decision to continue to play Johnson.

I can't recall seeing that before. The case may well have finished but the judge has yet to pass sentence.

Furthermore, wouldn't the same police have not been involved in any safeguarding reviews carried out by the club?

If so, what was their input at the time?

The David Conn Guardian article is worth a read. He poses some interesting questions regarding the conduct of Johnson's case.

Once sentencing is completed, apart from the usual prurient media shitstorm that will inevitably follow, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the conduct of one or two others is called to account.

As I mentioned to @Crook Mackem this was quite bizarre.

Is it the normal practice for the police to speak on behalf of the victim without instructions from her or her legal counsel?

It appears, to me, that she was hastily pushed in front of the cameras to get the police retaliation in first.

The questions were obviously completely pre-prepared and she may as well have read out a statement.

There's something about this 'exclusive interview' to the BBC only that's highly suspicious.

Yet you're unquestionably backing the club playing a sex offender for nearly a year after his arrest.

It's disgusting that you're calling others' level of support in question because they are dismayed with how the club they support have managed this situation.

They didn't play a sex offender as at the time he had only been accused and nothing had been proven against him.

The storm will die down. But stuff will keep coming out for days. Then we have the sentencing and all future court cases (if theres appeals) where info can be submitted.

It will linger on.

i can just picture it when he gets sentenced, this will blow up sky high, when it happens, and then he may appeal, it could drag on for months yet, possibility longer

I can see what you're saying about the club's statement, but I'm still going to be asking who made the allegations first before addressing that in relation to the club's statement. If the allegations had been made by the police I'd be going radio rental over the club statement, and while I'm making a bit of a assumption here, I'd expect everyone else on this board would be as well.

However, if the allegations have been made by a convicted sex offender who was called a liar and manipulative by a judge, I'm not convinced that the club have to answer them. Unless of course you think Johnson is somehow telling the truth over this when he's lied through his teeth about numerous other things over a sustained period of time.

I suppose it just comes down to how much you believe the veracity of the source of those allegations. If you believe that source to be reliable, then yes, I can understand people being unhappy with the club's statement. I happen to doubt the source of those allegations, so end up thinking that the club's statement is sufficient.

This is mind-boggling.

People can cut and slice it all they like. It's really obvious what's happened to everyone other than than those who are going to great lengths to convince themselves otherwise.

I work with loads of mags...some very bitter, and no one is really that interested in this.

Byrne has fucked up massively and needs to go. End of story.

This.
Even the staunchest Byrne supporter must surely admit that this situation has been handled incredibly badly - and the consequences to our club's reputation worldwide, are huge.

Hadn't heard that. You're suggesting that they came to an agreement then, or gave in completely?
No idea, it was reported in certain circles, certainly in the Italian press that we'd stumped up. We've paid according to his dad in this article

I dunno if this has already been posted but:

There's a copy of exactly what the PC said. It's probably already on here somewhere buried away.

Ironic really seeing as being a noncey fiddler appears to have been a pre requisite to work there in the past

Ok then, let's take a different view and use Johnson's QC as the source of these allegations. Do you not find anything unusual in the fact that he refused to answer the Guardian's questions over the matter? After all, that would have stopped all the speculation over what information was known by Sunderland. And if what has been alleged was true, then I'd see no reason for the QC to stay quiet as they've got nothing to lose by making a statement imo. I might be wrong and there may be legal reasons for it but that's not what they said to the Guardian so I doubt that. They just refused to answer.

Serious question ......... would you be happy if the judge pilloried the conduct of the police and totally exonerated the club?

QC would have confidentiality agreements I would have thought. Can only release exactly what AJ says to I would have thought.

Interesting. There's no ruling anywhere from FIFA in the public domain on this. Just his father saying he's free to go, and lots of graphics saying FIFA, to give it an air of truth. I'm not convinced.

If that is the truth of what happened I would be completely happy for that. I would also be happy for the PFA to get the blame if it turns out they misled the club.

I would like to see the truth to come out of this and those who acted inappropriately to be punished, whether it's coppers, senior management at SAFC or the PFA.

The issue is at the moment it looks like, at the very least, the club is at a minimum partially responsible in all this. And with SAFC being MY club, I am more upset about that than the PFA or police, as I have no allegiance to either of the latter. I feel let down by the club on this.

They will. It will be soon forgotten about you idiot.
As I've said three TV screens in the gym this morning, one with BBC breakfast, one with the ITV breakfast show, whatever that's called, and one with Sky news. The only reference was on the BBC north East bulletin, it lasted seconds.
