Lawyers?

Tosser Pride had me boiling last night re the AJ story. Milking it with the Radio Newc agenda.

Anyway...

Has Dawnie spoken yet...:mad::mad::mad:

Has something happened? All morning 5live have been running this as their headline story, come the 10 o'clock news bulletin nothing absolutely nothing and the story seem to of been taken down on the BBC News web site. Whats changed?
Only so many times they can tie themselves in knots about this before they run out of string.

If you think that's a denial after it's been explicitly said that Johnson admitted guilt and Byrne saw documentary that proved he'd committed an offence, and that statement was intended in its own words to refute allegations made during the trial, then you are dreaming.

It states that the documents were passed straight to the QC so it is a denial that she had any time to review the documents.

The club could have been clearer, I agree but the fact they weren't is not an admission of any guilt.

I certainly wish the club had clarified this or do at some point soon to put the matter to bed once and for all.

Given the way things have been twisted against the club by the media so far it's obvious to see why they would be reluctant to give any more statements though.

They have already stated: "Some documents were received relating to the case, which were immediately sent to Mr. Pownall for his attention. However, the club was not in a position to make any judgment on the outcome of the case"

They could be more clear about specific allegations against them but that is a denial and the fact they didn't specifically mention certain things does not mean they are guilty of them.
They also said "he was confident of success once all evidence had been considered". Surely if the club had seen all of the messages, as being claimed, they could not have believed that at all! Points to exaggerations in court to me, rather than automatically assuming the Club's incompetence/ignorance/cover-up!

I am of the opinion that if the rumoured 4-10 year sentence is true, Johnson has been made example of and harshly punished.

Just yesterday I was reading about a man that was taking indecent photos of young girls, and touching them in toy shops whilst secretly filming it. He had been doing this 'project' for years. This man has been given 2 years in prison. How does that crime deserve 50% less time then what Johnson is looking at?

Ones a paedophile the other is a man that acted very irresponsibly and arrogantly but had no history in pursuing young girls until this incident.
I think the charge he was found guilty of, probably warrants a decent sentence if you add the grooming and his position in society.

You're always going to find problems with the legal system if you compare it to every other case out there

I tell you what, if I was accused of knowing someone was guilty of a sex crime against a child and playing him anyway, and it wasn't true, I would properly deny it. I would say I did not hear Johnson admit anything, and that I did not read the documents. I would not issue a statement which doesn't actually deny it, and makes me look worse by using the exact kind of words needed for a denial on a side issue but not use them to deny the main thing.

Without a further clarification, the media and everyone else is absolutely entitled to assume someone has fucked up, and it's not twisting things in the slightest to do so.

If this is the case, I'm sure we all agree the club should be called out and punished.

Apparently we don't all agree that.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. This piece of shit has lied to the police, lied in court, lied to his girlfriend, lied to his family, lied to supporters and I believe lied to the club. One person has caused all of this, he abused an under aged girl and tried to make out she was a liar as well. I hope the fucker rots in prison.
And thankfully he is going to jail. However, quite rightly, some of us want an explanation of the clubs conduct. Hopefully it will turn out only one person knew the details, but right now no one knows, so discussion is rife.

It's unlikely that only one person knew. There will have been a lot of discussion. The whole club is under the pump, unfortunately.

I have no idea why people keep bringing this point up, he's being punished, he's going to get a lengthy sentence.

We aren't saying the club are as bad as Johnson ffs, we just want answers as to why he was allowed to play if we knew what had gone on.

This isn't going away mind. The Echo have waded in, which is usually the last straw.

Because Johnson is an adult the finer details cannot be disclosed to anyone ( doesn't stop Johnson saying things)
The club will have been told of the allegations he was facing because of safeguarding issues ,
Johnson hadn't even been interviewed when the polis had this meeting,
That's my understanding of it anyway

Partying in Dubai days before his court date, yawning in court and overheard saying "this is boring, hope we're done by Friday", and one of the papers today said he thought he was only going to get a suspended sentence! Johnson lived up to every 'thick footballer' stereotype in the book

Good questions...

'1. Adam Johnson said in his trial that during a meeting with Margaret Byrne on May 4, 2015, he admitted grooming and kissing a 15-year-old girl. Do the club accept this happened?

2. If so, knowing the likely outcome of such serious admissions, why did they continue to play Johnson?

3. The statement says that the CEO was only present for part of the May 4 meeting. Given the seriousness of what was being discussed, why was this and who, if anyone, represented the club in her absence?

4. The club says it refuted in the "strongest possible terms" some of the evidence given by Johnson in court. Why did Margaret Byrne not attend the court to refute those claims when she was given the opportunity by the defence team?

5. Your statement talks about safeguarding measures that were put in place after Johnson’s suspension was lifted. What were those measures and which "relevant" agencies were involved?

6. What was the legal advice which prompted the club to lift Johnson’s suspension after a meeting with the PFA and was Ellis Short involved in the decision-making process?

7. If Sunderland were not fighting relegation, would the club have continued to play Johnson once his suspension was lifted?

8. Does the club acknowledge any duty of care and compensation to a life-long fan who was abused by one of their employees? And will the club be issuing a formal apology to the victim?

9. Have any further safeguarding or child-protection measures been implemented at the club as a result of the trial?

10. Do the club have any regrets over how it has acted in relation to these matters?'

This for me. People want Byrne to be guilty. The statement is poor but it doesn't prove they're guilty. People demanding they deny these allegations would just pick holes in the next statement or say they don't believe her. Sad state of affairs. Johnson is the one who should be the recipient of people's anger.

I'm not demanding that she deny the allegations, I am hoping that she will, and if she does come out and completely deny all the allegations then I will believe her and be relieved that the club I support has not done what the press, the police, and others are reporting that we have, namely playing someone who the club knew to have kissed and groomed one of our own young supporters.
I also think that will be the feeling of most of the Sunderland supporters who have trouble with the statement that the club has previously released. The press might keep pushing, but as a Sunderland supporter if my club categorically deny the allegations, and not skirt around them like they have in the statement they have released, then I will back and believe them 100%.
