Y'see, this is where we differ.
He should be in some secure unit away from potential victims etc, but what he needs is mental help. He's clearly wired up wrong.
He's not a danger to society the way a drug dealer or armed robber is. It's a different kind of danger.
But in prison, he has the opportunity to meet with people who have done worse than he has and he could be go further down the rabbit hole. So to speak.
Likelihood is he'll get a hiding and get moved somewhere else before being let out sooner, which doesn't fix the root of the problem at all.

Ironic really given that in law, the reality is that there is only a distinction between being a child or an adult. Being an adolescent isn't referenced anywhere.

I can't remember but even if it wasn't, the minute he found out her age he should've stopped. The right course of action isn't to google the legal age of consent and continue anyway.
