What was he appealing? Would be amazed if he ever successfully appeals the conviction for digital penetration but it wouldn't surprise me that much if he was to get a couple years knocked off his sentence. 6 years seemed at the upper end of the likely sentence.

No. Good behaviour etc. and he'll be out after 3 I think, presuming he complies with therapy/ support and doesn't behave like an arse.

He was appealing against the conviction and the length of sentence.

6 years for that is a joke, people have raped multiple kids and been given lesser sentences.

If it was a woman footballer messaging a young lad she'd have got half the sentence. 6 years is massive when you see all these teachers having sex with the kids and getting less

Was he appealing his conviction or his sentence?
