A way to refresh the Premier League

The Premier League is dying a death because of the 40 point brigade. Even fans of teams like Southampton know they are at their limit and will struggle to break in to the top 7 so have a massive sense of 'what's the point'.

Perennial 17th place finishers hang round for years stinking the places while spending a fortune and getting further and further into debt just to tread water. It would actually be healthier for these clubs to go down sooner rather than later to regenerate and come back up.

The club who finishes 3rd in the championship is almost always good enough to go up and often walks the league the season after while the club who finished 17th in the premier league continues just to tread water. It would be better for both clubs if they had just swapped places.

Arsenal manager, Herbert Chapman, made the argument almost a century ago that you should relegate half the league. It might be a little bit of a startling statement but the more you look into it the more it makes sense. He said 'The fear of relegation, is forcing clubs to make short-sighted, rushed and often regrettable decisions.' And 'the majority of clubs, interest begins to vanish with the coming of spring. Teams have been knocked out of the FA Cup, league honours are not likely to come their way. There is not even the morbid excitement of wondering if the club will escape relegation. Most of the clubs are virtually safe. It is stalemate. Nothing to fight for, nothing to struggle against.'
it's amazing how much of this still rings true today.

Maybe relegating half the league is excessive, but traditional end of season dead rubbers are happing earlier and earlier in to the season. It's about time something was done to change this.

This would be my suggestion:

  • Relegate 4. The top of the championship offers more than the bottom of the premier league. The top 3 go up automatly and 4th to 7th then go to the playoffs as normal.
  • Playoffs at the bottom of the premier league. The 4 teams above the relegation zone go into a playoff meaning you'd have to finish as high as 12th to guarantee safety, meaning pretty much everybody had something to play for going into the end of the season. The loser of the playoffs would then play the loser of the playoff final in the championship, the winner would get the place in the premier league.
With potentially quarter of the league being turned over each season the league would stay fresh. And with virtually the whole league having something to play for other than prize money up to the final day, the league would stay interesting. It would also ease the pain of relegation a little with clubs safe in the knowledge it would be far easier to return within 12 months. The fear of relegation wouldn't be so great and clubs would be less likely to sack managers saving money on compensation. They'd also be less likely to splurge vast amounts of money on transfer fees and wages on players in a desperate hope to stay in the league.

Relegate 5, it would make teams more desperate to win, it will never happen

Should have a play off system like in the jock premier league with a slight difference

5th in Championship plays 4th place at 4th place ground
Winner of above plays 3rd place team at 3rd's ground
Winner of above plays 3rd bottom team in premier league for place in premier league

Nooooooooooo

It is dull like, but I'd rather be in it getting the 40 points.

No point in even being in the division if that is your ambition.

It would take an absolute insane amount of good fortune and skill but it would be possible to penetrate the elite organically over a sustained period.

5th place might as well not even bother showing up for that.

Might be enough for the chairmen, but for the fans who really cares if the owner makes an extra million quid. Hardly going to go far in the transfer market.

True, although I'd have thought getting a few extra million for the club would be motivation enough for players.
Maybe I'm just naive.

Also seems a bit daft for theoretically the strongest side only being fresh and playing once as opposed to the weakest side having to play 3 away games in a row against theoretically 3 better sides.

I'd suggest flipping the prize money but that may lead to a 'race for 17th'

Surely a better way is to scrap all of the leagues so you get rid of relegation and promotion?

I've seen that idea bandied about a fair bit recently and think it's terrible. Nowt wrong with the current system. That said, it's probably terrible enough for the FA to seriously consider.
