upgraded my 7d a few times, and a 5dMKII a couple too. Painless, no problems.

With firmware updates do they install automatically when you connect the camera to the pc via a USB or do you specifically have to go and hunt them out, download and install?

this. You put the firmware upgrade (a .bin file iirc) onto the flash card, fire up the camera, and pick firmware upgrade from the camera menu.

The camera checks that the file is correct for the camera, then off it goes and upgrades.

I always check on here for Canon upgrades.

Not really. One is from the manufacturer and the other is from a pro/enthusiast. They may have some functional similarities, but I've not looked over the list tbh..

After seeing this thread I checked the firmware of my 5D, and there had been 2 updates since I last checked it. Latest firmware now installed. :-D
