worrying stuff, strange that it just disappeared - was just reading there that they haven't spotted a crash site in the sea or anything / very bizarre

Absolutely heartbreaking, 239 people on board, including 14 kids.

The thing is the flight path is mostly over land so surely they'd have found some wreckage by now? Also they weren't contacted by the aircraft itself so it's obviously happened very quickly. So tragic.

According to the BBC the accident appears to have happened 130 nautical miles from land.

Had rolls-royce engines, could be a load of shit happening at work, hope not though, with a bit of luck it will not be the engines at fault.

Doubt it's the engines. One may go, but not both at the same time. Whatever happened must have occurred very quickly for them to be unable to get a distress signal off at that altitude.

Flightradar24 had the disappearance just off the Malaysian coast, 40 mins into the flight. The authorities were working on the assumption that the incident happened 2 hours into the flight, off the coast of Vietnam.

Apparently, after hours of focussing on the wrong area, the official line has now switched to what Flightradar has been saying all along. Shocking waste of time with regard to any potential rescue efforts.

If it's fallen from the sky so rapidly that the crew couldn't even get a mayday message out, then any rescue would be futile anyway :([DOUBLEPOST=1394272522][/DOUBLEPOST]
Remind me not to fly anywhere from Malaysia

Or Russia.
