A lot will depend on demographics, I would imagine the average age of supporters is a fair bit higher than 20 years ago.

Big crowds in the future will depend on a lot of younger fans going to games. There are now fewer people in the younger age brackets so will be a challenge to maintain big crowds.

I never understand people who keep saying that. In a few of our premier league seasons, our average was above that.
There were a lot of cheaper tickets on offer though. Not a bad thing, but plenty complained due to being cheaper that a ST (rightly so).

Good grief. There's absolutely no substance behind anything you say on this. There's plenty of opportunities for kids to watch us at next to no cost. Still got 18,000 empty seats.

Get man city's owners and we may need to consider things but that's not happening.
We have have proven with a top ten team we can hit 47,000.

The new owners have said they are looking at the German model ie bigger stadiums, cheaper tickets bigger crowds. Therefore this gives opportunity to get young kids in and build the support for the club for decades to come.

Sunderland AFC is uniquely placed in this country to do it cost effectively, has the land and potential fan base.

I think the new owners have the vision. Hopefully like Sir Bob they dint listen to some of the negative doom mongers on here. If sir Bob had listened to you we would still be at roker park with no aol or Bol.

Over the years, have away teams sold their allocation? I personally think we have missed a trick over the years not cashing in on teams that travel well. I know a lot don’t but we could give a bigger chunk of the ground to away fans. Cash in on those large numbers imo.

I don't think you understand construction mate if you think that could be done. Clearly it COULD be done, but we could probably buy a current England player and then some for what it would cost. Brickwork needs a foundation and that cladding is hanging off the steel work. You cannot hang brickwork off steel work, especially when the steel work was not designed for that in the first place.

Take a look at other grounds and ours is not so different really.
the stadium was built with the intention of extending though. it was explained at the time, that the 'base' of the stadium was designed structurally so that in future the roof of the south and east stands could be removed, and another level added, quite simply. I'm sure Bob Murray brought in the bloke from Ballast Wilshier or Tolent( Wood?) and gave him a short -term directorship on the board while the stadium was built. He had previously been involved in The Amsterdam arena build, and it was he who explained this future extension being fairly straightforward. It was a masterstroke bringing him in , and it helped Murray to deliver the stadium at a really low cost.

We have 18,000 empty seats at the moment. We have to concentrate on building the team up and reducing that number and hopefully opening the full ground up.

We already have fantastic deals for kids to attend our matches. There's not much more we could do here. Perhaps lower adult season tickets but we have to be careful as we rely more on our ticket revenue outside the premier league.

Methven is on about tapping into Durham and Gateshead more. It's good to hear. But ultimately what will win new supporters over is a winning team and preferably in the premier laegue. That isn't going to be easy.

If somehow we found ourselves challenging Liverpool, man united regularly. Winning cups etc. Then demand will really go up. We'll see us getting support back from areas where we're seeing more Mags.

But that just isn't realistic unless we get a man city type owner. It's probably not going to happen.

Just extending the ground and offering cheap tickets won't work. It could really damage us. There's nothing worse than being sat in an empty ground. It puts people off going.

I think football clubs want to restrict demand to up-sell. My football club (Liverpool) sold every general admission ticket for the 2nd half of the season this morning in 10mins. That's maybe £10-15m they are getting early to invest, earn interest whatever. And every punter paid £30 just to be eligible for that sale: most will have been disappointed.

Inevitably some will then go and buy hospitality or packages having missed out. They've already tried to put the prices up but that was seen off with a boycott a few years ago. I wonder how long that will last...

The club has designs and existing planning permission for a new Anfield Rd End yet still haven't committed to building it. They're on record stating the business case in terms of years v pay-back isn't compelling without corporate, but they might do it anyway like they're doing us a favour.

Isn’t there a stat regularly rolled out about how it is already one of the emptiest stadia in the country when compared to its actual capacity?

Aye let’s stick another 18000 seats in, genius idea

Was there any models or images ever produced as to what the stadium will look like if it was ever fully extended?

Also does anybody think we will ever get there in the next 10-15 years?

Why?

We've got nowhere near in 20 years with 2 7th place finishes. So no.

£5.5m apparently.

£7M according to Wikipedia which quotes it's source as Days, p.303 - if that's anything to do with Paul Days then it's probably right.
