61 Substitutions Made This Season

It’s really irritating that he hasn’t worked out that there’s very little between professional players out of possession, so the fresh legs makes such a difference. Left Le Fee and Roberts out to dry against Leeds.

None of the top sides go through games without making subs anymore, it’s just such an obvious failing…

Time for an update.

Through 40 games this season Le Bris has made 114 substitutions, an average of 2.8 per game.

Perhaps most damning is that of our 114 substitutions, only 2 have scored a goal and only 4 have been involved in a goal.

By comparison, Sheffield United have made 177 subs, Leeds 171, Bristol 155, Boro 152, Burnley 144. Corberan at WBA who left months ago has still only made 7 less subs than us

Leeds subs have been involved in 24 goals, Sheffield United's 12, Burnley's 11, Bristol's 17, Coventry's 14 and Boro's 9.

An average of 2.8 substitutions per game in the 5 sub era is pretty mad like.

No doubt whatsoever that the amount of minutes that our players our playing and lack of rotation has contributed to so many injuries over the course of the season.

Before anyone says that we have little option to rotate, this thread was created in December and it was clear that it was going to be an issue long before the injury crisis, which is coming home to roost at the most crucial part of the season.

And yes, I know we won today  but it's still a topic worth discussing IMO.

so RLB is doing the right thing not making loads of subs

you need to represent that as a percentage of total goals

not if subs are not contributing

again you need to factor in the number (and duration) of injuries to other teams that have made more subs
we won today
gtfi!! :D:D

It's frustrating that the management seemingly going backwards... Great start, now we just hope to be lucky. Not even bothering with trying to change bad games

Did you watch today’s game or even last week’s at home vs Millwall? Both very professional performances and defensive displays.

Its almost like our manager is doing so well in his first season folk are seatching for something to twist about. His approach has us winning 21 n drawing 12 from 40.
Or from another POV, we are only nine points off the top and can only wonder how many of those losses could have been draws and how many of those draws could have been wins if the manger had been a bit more adventurous?

Yeah yeah of course if me aunty had a knob she’d be me uncle, but I can’t help thinking this season has the whiff of missed opportunity reminiscent of the Cack Boss season. Time will tell.

On substitutions I’d also add that those figures should re calculated removing pointless 89th minute substitutions like bringing on Aleksik today. Absolutely pointless.

Id argue its a missed oportunity thanks to those above him, not RLB.

Why not both?
Sure a bit more money spent in the windows could certainly have added a few more points but I think his in-game management of the team has been very suspect.

It’s obvious we have one of the youngest teams in the league and there’s a general consensus that fatigue can be a factor among young players. Some squad rotation would have helped IMO especially when you consider points dropped in the dying minutes of a game. I know the reaction to that is usually “there’s no talent on the bench so he doesn’t trust them” but I don’t buy that. Fresh legs for the last ten or fifteen minutes may have been a greater necessity than watching Roberts sky another corner into the crowd or fail to beat the first man!😁 Or being as Roberts is not one of the young lads then seeing Rigg jog around in no mans land absolutely shattered.

Not at all. Le Bris has done a very good job but is not immune to critique.

As evidenced by this thread it was flagged months ago that lack of squad rotation was going to become an issue and surprise surprise, it comes home to roost at the most crucial part of the season.

Mundle for example plays 45 minutes against Hull in his first game back and then starts 5 of the next 6 games after being out for 14 weeks with a hamstring injury.

The reoccurrence of that exact same injury against WBA is just a coincidence I suppose?

Le Bris' lack of any sort of squad/minutes management across the course of the season is absolutely a valid critique.

When BBC Radio Newcastle's commentator Nick Barnes asked Le Bris if he would urge the fans to be patient, he said: "If it's possible.

"If it's not possible they can be disappointed. No problem. I can respect that, but at the same time it's important maybe to step back to look around the full season and to understand that this stage is different.

"We still have the youngest team in the league, made the fewest substitutions, and we are in a good place. So manage expectations."

He’s obviously not making subs as he thinks it’s the best way for results and statistically he’s right, but it could be tweaked I reckon

Is he claiming making the fewest substitutions is something to celebrate?

If he'd had used up his two remaining subs at Leeds in the dying minutes, we'd have came away with 3 points. He doesn't seem to get the time wasting aspect, which pretty much makes us pretty rare in this league.

One occasion I know, but there will definitely be other instances where his reluctance to rotate and blood fringe players in will have cost us points.
